see, this is why athletes should always be nice to journalists. inevitably, they’ll say something inarticulate. a journalist who likes dustin might clean up his quote as follows: “dustin pedroia dismissed concerns about hitting leadoff, saying that while he might have hit .214 in 26 at-bats, ‘if they would have kept me in another 20 games I would have hit .414.’”

talking out loud and off-the-cuff for a living means you’ll probably sound stupid when unedited much of the time.

Uh…sure, Dustin, ride the um, er, “wave”…heartbeats/minute do in fact vary quite a bit. Über Canadian, David Suzukii had a fascinating piece on it in an edition of his show “The Nature of Things”: the variability of a normally working heart can be put to music and it plays a lovely tune. Keep a song in your heart, indeed. What all that has to do with batting average is beyond me…
