Duke is right though, in division or not you should make trades that are good for your team.

When Duke was GM of the Red Sox, he traded Mike Stanley to the Yankees for a PTBNL and Tony Armas Jr…

…who was flipped that next offseason to Montreal along with Carl Pavano for Pedro Martinez.

So yeah, he’s not shy about trading within the division.

On June 15, 1976, the Orioles traded Doyle Alexander, Jimmy Freeman, Elrod Hendricks, Ken Holtzman and Grant Jackson to the Yankees. Of that group, none contributed much to the Yankees. Well, Alexander had a good end to ’76 but he left via free agency.

The Orioles got back Tippy Martinez, Rick Dempsey, Rudy May, Scott McGregor and Dave Pagan. Rudy May won 18 games the following season and was flipped to the Expos for Gary Roenicke, Joe Kerrigan and Don Stanhouse. By 1979, Martinez, Dempsey, McGregor, Roenicke and Stanhouse were key players on a team that won the AL pennant. Oh, but you wouldn’t want to trade within your own division, would you?
