I’m a Phillies fan (I should disclose first) and I look at his numbers and you’re right they aren’t gaudy. the excuses though…

2010 campaign: He had the second lowest run support of any starter in MLB. He finished with a 3.06 ERA. He would have been 17-11 if the Phillies had scored just 2 runs in 6 of the games he started.

That being said. His 2008 Postseason MVP is more a result of not having a batter than stood out in that postseason. But you’re right he did allow 7 runs in 3 starts including 4 in his one world series start.

Nonetheless I believe Cole is probably worth Johan Santana money. We shouldn’t be surprised afterall baseball teams ALWAYS overpay for LHP SP

Really? Isn’t there anyone else who thinks that Hamels isn’t worth that much money other than me? He’s had 15 wins only once in his career and usually has close to the same # of loses too. And don’t use the excuse that he lead them to the Championship in 2008, pitching didn’t win the series for the Phils that year, it was the bats that carried the team past their average pitching.

Sorry, but for his career #s, he’s only worth around 8 – 10M/yr. He is not an elite pitcher, just above average.
