NBC SportsTalk: Torii Hunter wouldn’t take the bait

Mar 7, 2012, 8:40 AM EDT

I interviewed Torii Hunter at Angels camp yesterday. He wouldn’t take the bait when I asked him if L.A. is truly an Angels town now. That’s probably because he’s a pro and knows how not to step in it when some jerk member of the media asks a question designed to create controversy. Oh well.

But he was nice enough to talk to me anyway. And here is what he said in response to my lame questions.

I personally don’t think LA will ever be a Halos town….

    • Old Gator - Mar 7, 2012 at 9:08 AM

I dunno. Designatedhitterball is kinda like Rick Santorum; with its emphasis on clubbing away at things, it has a special appeal to the heavy-browed, grunting, mammoth-hunter types.

      • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Mar 7, 2012 at 9:21 AM

Designatedhitterball is kinda like Rick Santorum

Harkens back to days of yore, believes things would be better for everyone if they did, hates the advances made on the other side (AL), feels they are being persecuted for their life style; yup, I’d say Santorum = NL ball any day of the week and twice on Sundays!

      • cltjump - Mar 7, 2012 at 9:54 AM

LA, from what little I’ve seen, is a strict Dodger town, with Angels afficianados limited to Orange County, the rich side.

  2. Old Gator - Mar 7, 2012 at 9:09 AM

Craig, you’re not just some jerk. Take some pride in your uniqueness.

  3. cur68 - Mar 7, 2012 at 9:29 AM

Torii Hunter looks like he’s in his late 20’s. Not a wrinkle or line on that guy’s face. So lets see: tall, athletic, appears to be 10 years younger than he actually is, professional athlete, articulate, clever enough not to be baited like a Philly Phan, and plays baseball in California. Right. I hate his guts…awww, heck, I can’t hate Torii. Just can’t. Oh well, just put up with it I guess.

    • Utley's Hair - Mar 7, 2012 at 9:54 AM

“…clever enough not to be baited like a Philly Phan…”

And just what the hell is THAT supposed to mean?

      • Kevin S. - Mar 7, 2012 at 10:14 AM

        Ryan Howard sucks.

      • cur68 - Mar 7, 2012 at 11:24 AM

        Yep. That’s what it means.

      • Utley's Hair - Mar 7, 2012 at 11:34 AM

        Worth the money? Meh…we’ll see…eventually.

        Sucks? Not by any stretch.

But that’s as baited as I get with that.

  4. Gobias Industries - Mar 7, 2012 at 9:51 AM

That’s all well and good, but how does he feel about women and children voting?

  5. randygnyc - Mar 7, 2012 at 10:37 AM

Can’t access the video from an IPad. Anyone else having problems?

    • El Bravo - Mar 7, 2012 at 10:57 AM

I see you are having a first-world problem there.

      • drunkenhooliganism - Mar 7, 2012 at 11:09 AM

Would that problem be that he couldnt think of another way to tell us he owned an ipad

      • El Bravo - Mar 7, 2012 at 11:17 AM

Given that tens of millions of folks own one and a lot more will after this week, I don’t think people stating they own an iPad is an act of pretentiousness. Maybe last year, but this is 2012, brah, everyone’s got a tablet.

      • El Bravo - Mar 7, 2012 at 11:18 AM

Oh, also, I totally do NOT own a tablet. My my super awesome MacBook Pro will suffice. Now that was pretentious.

      • koufaxmitzvah - Mar 7, 2012 at 11:20 AM

Unless his back is hurting because he’s standing on his feet 20 hours a day spray painting some metallic dust on a thin sheet of metal. Then it’s a 3rd world problem.

      • drunkenhooliganism - Mar 7, 2012 at 11:29 AM

Its the apple people always somehow squeezing in some news about their ipads in conversations. My awesomely hot wife and i are always making fun of their pretension while having our afternoon grey goose cocktails.

      • Gobias Industries - Mar 7, 2012 at 11:49 AM

My butler just read your joke to me and we both agree that it was funny.

      • cur68 - Mar 7, 2012 at 4:39 PM

“I’m not a iPad fan but I have great friends who are Apple Stock owners…”
        -Mitt Romney

    • koufaxmitzvah - Mar 7, 2012 at 11:16 AM

Yes. My back has been hurting for two days.

      • stlouis1baseball - Mar 7, 2012 at 4:50 PM

Hahaha! Outstanding post Cur! I refer to ole’ Mitt as the “plastic Man.”
He belongs on top of a damn wedding cake.

  6. El Bravo - Mar 7, 2012 at 10:59 AM

Is it me or is Craig way more jacked and in way better physical shape than Torii?

    • koufaxmitzvah - Mar 7, 2012 at 11:18 AM

Yeah, I’m going to have to say it’s you. Or maybe it’s the weed you’re smoking, in which case, can I come over? I’ll grab us a pizza.

      • El Bravo - Mar 7, 2012 at 11:21 AM

Dude, if I didn’t have this stupid job, I’d be home playing my new copy of Mass Effect 3 while getting a head massage from Mary Jane. So, yeah, in that scenario, I’ll be needing a pizza within the hour…

      • koufaxmitzvah - Mar 7, 2012 at 11:35 AM

Pat Robertson says you should quit your job then. Hallelujah!

      • El Bravo - Mar 7, 2012 at 11:41 AM

I would but the damn job pays for my place of residence, herbage and vidya games…catch-22 right there. Not to mention, you can’t meet, greet and get between the sheets with a lady when you ain’t got no scratch. You also can’t meet, greet, etc. when you sit around playing the aforementioned vidya games, but alas, I continue to try to find my perfect vidya game loving, baseball adoring, Buddhist lady.

      • stlouis1baseball - Mar 7, 2012 at 12:01 PM

Hahaha! That is funny Sandy. But are you sure it isn’t Barry who actually wants everyone to quite their jobs. You know…dependency…dependency…dependency.

      • koufaxmitzvah - Mar 7, 2012 at 12:31 PM

I don’t know about that, Lou. Job numbers have been improving lately, and something tells it not because of prayer. I mean, if we can’t pray away the tornadoes, and if we can’t pray away the gay, then how can we possibly pray successfully for more work?

Anyway, with yesterday’s news that Pat Robertson says to Legalize It, I think it’s official that he and the Pres don’t really think alike.

      • stlouis1baseball - Mar 7, 2012 at 3:27 PM

I hear what you are saying Sandy. I truly do. But just because they are “saying it” doesn’t actually make it true. No different the Fox, CNN, Yahoo, etc… You think there might just possibly be a different angle? I mean…I form my own opinions because I recognize that EVERY news outlet has an agenda. The difference is…Fox has an agenda different from most of the others. I have started referring to Yahoo as “The Station brought to you by Obama for President.” Agenda’s. Everyone has them. Personally, I think the warm and fuzzy parties agenda is to keep people dependent. The repeated extensions of the unemployment benefits should speak volumes. Cause’ extending them sure as hell isn’t giving anyone the incentive to look for work. By the way…I am coming over to share in the Pizza and Ganja with you and Bravo. We just have to agree to NOT talk politics.

      • Utley's Hair - Mar 7, 2012 at 4:34 PM

You have a problem with extending unemployment for people who were caught in the worst economic downturn in who the hell knows how long? You know, the one that was all but caused by deregulation and the crash of the housing market? Especially as a stopgap to prevent worsening the crash by keeping people somewhat close to being able to stay in their homes? Well, I hope you don’t need it then.

And FOX’s agenda just so happens to have a basis in lies and innuendo, and not reality.

    • Utley's Hair - Mar 7, 2012 at 11:41 AM

The main question is this: Is Tiffany in the BSOHL?

      • El Bravo - Mar 7, 2012 at 11:44 AM

I think that that has been the case her entire life, no? Consistency is her thing.

      • stlouis1baseball - Mar 7, 2012 at 11:59 AM

Great question Chase. I am thinking Tiffany’s worse shape is still better than most.
As Bravo states…she’s all about the consistency.

      • stlouis1baseball - Mar 7, 2012 at 4:49 PM

Understood Chase. Fox and ONLY Fox has an agenda. Every other news outlet (mainstream or otherwise)…has NO agenda and everything they “report” is truthful. Personally, I think for myself as I fully apprecate that EVERYONE has an agenda. As for the unemployment issue…of course I don’t have an issue with the unemployment benefits specifically. What I have an issue with is the continual extensions of said benefits. They ultimately serve nothing more than providing a crutch that people ultimately never put down. Extending benefits…and extending benefits…and extending them once again provides ZERO incentives to look for work. After all…why should I look for work when that check keeps rollin’ in? And if you think a paltry unemployment check keeps people in their home you are simply not being realistic. What I refer to as fantasy land. As far as me needing it…I am with you. I hope myself…you…or anyone else never needs it. I can tell you one thing with 100% certainty…I would have to look for work immediately as that check doesn’t even come close to paying the bills. But those in other circumstances…if it pays the bills and continually rolls in…I ask you again…what is the incentive?

      • Utley's Hair - Mar 7, 2012 at 5:53 PM

I didn’t say that the other outlets were always 100% accurate. They all might twist a stat here and there. However, FOX does it much more egregiously and often.

As for unemployment, I know quite a few people who have been downsized or rightsized or streamlined or whatever the hell euphemism for being tossed out on their a$$ is being thrown around nowadays. More than a few of them have been forced to take the extension (which you do have to register for, by the way, so you can go ahead and not do that if you want) due to not finding work after six months of benefits have run out. And yes, they were actively looking for work. And yes, they do have families to support. And no, they didn’t just accept the funds with no incentive to look for work. And no, the funds didn’t take the place of a paycheck. All they managed to do was get closer to making ends meet, so they could stay in their homes and off the street. So I have absolutely no problem with these extensions, and the claim that they make someone sit on the couch for however long they get the money, in lieu of getting out there and finding a job is all a bunch of hooey being perpetuated by FOX and the right.

“there was a problem loading the requested video. Please try again later”. Message keeps coming up. I only mentioned the particular hardware because I’m not a computer savvy guy. I know just enough to know that sometimes stuff doesn’t work from platform to platform. I’m also accessing the site from the NBC sportstalk app, not through a browser. Sorry to break some hearts, but I wasn’t bragging…….

    • El Bravo - Mar 7, 2012 at 5:18 PM

Dude, you created a conversation that went on so many tangents and interesting jokes, politics, and just overall weirdness. Considering this fact, you should get comment of the day. Well done. Now go get that new iPad, I hear it makes peope bow before you when you weild it in public…

  8. jmulder26 - Mar 7, 2012 at 5:29 PM

Did anyone else laugh at the guy that walks in shot around the :38 mark and then realizes there’s an interview going on walks backwards out of the shot like someone presses rewind?
