I hate to defend this guy (Matthews) and that guy (Jeter) but this excerpt from Matthews’ article is taken out of context. If you read the entire article, he’s basically making some of the same points Craig is here. He’s saying that it’s waaayyy too soon to say Jeter’s done (“it’s a ridiculously small sample, to be sure” and “forget about spring stats — they mean nothing”); and that he deserves the benefit of the doubt after the halfway decent season he had last year. But the fact of the matter is that at this late point in Jeter’s career, you really don’t know what you’re going to get out of him. And he’s asking his readers to take a stab at it: will we get 2011 Jeter again or 2010 Jeter?

I don’t think anyone should really analyze Spring Training since there have been so many players who tore it up in spring training just to do nothing in the regular season and vice versa.

We’re not even a week into the spring schedule and I’ve lost track of how many blog posts and tweets I’ve seen saying “OMG! our off-season moves are a complete failure!” (roll eyes)

I can sort of expect this type of behavior from Fan Boy Blogs, but not credentialed media in big markets.
