Check the innings stats since 2004 and tell me which way you would gamble. The back may be an indicator that Oswalt will not pitch for three or four more years, but you are 200+ innings of quality ball for seven years running, and 139 last year.

There is a big difference between overplaying the bargaining hand and not being worth the money.

Best case scenario: Carpenter sidelined until June but recovers nicely, in his place Oswalt is secured by St. Louis, his back presents no problems and the Cards role to another MLB title.

I feel Carpenter’s pain. Ever since El Dinero Gigante signed with the Angels my neck has been hurting also. My doctor prescribed a 12 pack of Bud and a Missouri Tiger basketball game. He guaranteed my neck would feel better until tomorrow morning.

too bad he’s injured, i never wish for injuries to another player…. that being said, non-cardinal’s fans will be very glad to see one of the biggest whiners/scumbags in the MLB on the bench this season.

UCW is right – carpenter pitched very well early on. carpenter’s early stretch was exhibit A for the “pitching wins are terrible” case.

early in 2011, the cards’ bullpen was terrible. only once they cut all the dead weight out of it (franklin, batista, tallet, augenstein) did it become excellent. without looking back game-by-game, i seem to recall carpenter being a multiple victim of bullpen blunders.

also, although run production was generally good in april, it slacked off in may and june.

It doesn’t make sense to save money on Pujols and then overpay for Oswalt.

Oswalt has been proven to be fragile himself, and a reasonable expectation for salary along with performance incentives would have gotten him a job.

Instead, he chose to believe that the millions of dollars the Cardinals offered him was a lack of respect.

I guess he’ll get a lot more respect on the unemployment line.

You can’t get too much pitching! Carpenter is great but he is a bit fragile! You saved all that money on Pujols! Oswalt is a bargain and a gamer!

Have to pull the trigger on that one. Should have done it already. They just never listen.

I suppose holding off on the doom and despair until we get an acutal diagnosis would be too much to ask for?

Considering his history injury, I would bet on the Cardinals being cautious and overreacting before I go for the season/career-ending injury. But what do I know. I’m an eternal optimist.

Joe Strauss is now reporting Carpenter is being examined for both nerve and muscle related issues in his neck.

IIRC, during those 8 or 9 games, Carp was still actually the Cardinals best pitcher if you look at advanced stats, but lost a bunch of games due to bad luck. Everybody else won games because the offense was incredible last year.

Listening to Derrick Goold now on the Bernie Miklasz show, he saying the Cardinals FO is “very concerned” and Carpenter is “leaving camp” for a second opinion.

He also said they would definitely revisit the Roy Oswalt talks if things don’t go well with Carps diagnosis.

Last year it was oblique injuries that ravaged MLB. Lets hope we will not look back to 2012 being the year of TRNI (towel related neck injuries).

Not to mention, that last season, he pitched very well overall, however we don’t know how injuries affected him early on in the season. Didn’t he fail to win a game for the first 9 or 10 starts? WHY? I think it had to be related to some minor nagging injuries which he may have tried to played through.

I love me some Chris Carpenter, but assuming he would have had about 32 starts a year, Chris has missed 100 starts since signing in 2003:

2003: Misses entire season
2004: Misses last two weeks and entire post season
2007: Starts opening day, is injured and misses rest of the season
2008: Pitches in 4 games total
2009: Misses 3 weeks

He’s been very durable the past two seasons, but with Carpenter, you’re always fearful of when the other shoe is gonna drop.

This is not exactly what Manning is suffering through. This just points out the problems with your team (in any sport) getting older. We who are older than Carpenter know how age affects your performance in any sport. That is the same problem that will inflict the Phills. The guys who get old, have to be in great shape and must avoid any small injury which could lead to bigger problems. Carpenter has had these small problems in the recent past, and I don’t think he is done with them. In addition, I don’t see Oswalt making any difference, as he may have the same type of problems (but with his back) for whomever picks him up.
