Basically I’m saying it would be silly to play games at this point. How many alternatives does Pudge have at this point of the spring and at this stage of his career? Giving the benefit of the doubt on this one.

I understand the implication, but this would be a weird thing for someone to bluff about, especially when most think the Royals would be a decent fit and the team did actually did inquire about him. I can’t be sure whether the Royals made an actual offer — sounds like semantics, really — but it’s pretty moot if the player tells the team that he’s not ready to play.
