Why is everyone forgetting the arbitration waiver. With a six year deal the Cubs could have sent him minors till June and had him for onr more year, thus he would have became a FA at 33. With the A’s he becomes an UFA at 30 and if he live up to the hype gets at least five at $17 million a year, a lot more then he would have received in the Cubs deal. If he is merely good he easily gets four years at same amount he would have made with the Cubs.

36 mil in 4 years is 9 mil a year. 36 mil in 6 years is 6 mil a year. So after his 4 year contract he’ll have 36 mil and lets say he does a 2 year contract for 18 mil total, he’ll have an extra 18 mil in where as if he took the 6 year deal, he’d have 18mil less money. The 4 year deal is the SMARTEST deal. Whatever money he gets after the four year deal will be bonus money.

No question it’s a great deal for Cespedes. I think he will be a great player, but I’m still not sure what the A’s were thinking.

Valid point. I just think he was taking the advice of an agent, who wants the cash now, and not the guy who has to play the game. Hopefully he saves the cash he get’s now, because history shows people peak at 28. And if my math is right, 30 is two years past 28. Bad advice. And drug testing is only getting better.

Because it’s the same money over 4 years rather than 6, and he hits free agency at 30 rather than 32. I’m not sure what you’re failing to recognize.

Racksie, you may be right that he will regret not going for more years, but the point is that he’s betting on himself. He’s gambling that he will be what everyone hopes he will be and then he will have the leverage at age 30 to land a final monster contract. If he waits until 32 then age comes into play. If he takes the Cubs longer deal now then he potentially loses several years of big money. It may be only 2 years difference but with the recent contract negotiations for Pujols and Fielder we have seen how each year into someone’s 30′s can make a huge difference.

I still stand by my math. The head injuries have not helped my memory of who he is though. Sorry. So confused. But seriously, why would you want to go to FA at 30? When you can get guaranteed money for two more years? Let’s check back in four years and see how this works out.

For every Cuban or Japanese players that actually is WORTH the money (I can count on 1 hand how many are), you have dozens that are busts, both as players and financially. Glad the A’s took the plunge, better than my Cubbies.

Professional baseball (as any professional sport) is about making money first, making money second, making money third, and winning baseball games 4th (or somewhere later in the priority list). He’s getting $36M for 4 years as an essentially unproven talent (Cuban baseball is equivalent to low A minor league ball with much greater variation in talent (i.e. the worst players are worse than anything in A ball and the best are better than anything there).

Cespedes should’ve been a FA in 2011, Hendry would’ve probably given him 8 years AND a full no trade clause.
8 years though, thats funny Cespedes.
