it’s called the “hot corner” for a reason. A majority of big league hitters are right handed and its much easier to pull a ball than to go the opposite way.. Hence a greater amount of hot shots ending up being hit at the third baseman. Using basic geometry you could also see that 3rd basemen are closer to the batter than either 2nd or shortstops.

Since most third basemen play behind the bag, except in sacrifice and bunt situations (which are rare in the AL) and the first baseman plays at the bag a good majority of the time to hold runners, I would have to disagree with your assessment of the situation.

I stopped for a few minutes to watch the game from my desk so I saw it happen live too (and up close) and it was fucking SCARY how close it came to his eye. I think it hit him in the sunglasses, and it was the frame that actually cut his cheek. Amazing that he was still standing and walked off the field because Pence scalded that pitch.

Terry Francona claimed that bad hop would have have done the same to any third baseman, but count me skeptical. It’s not like bad hops are that unusual, and how often do you see a guy take one right in the face like that?

Also saw it live and FWIW, Francona and Hershiser both said that any third baseman would have taken that one off the face.

It was hit about as hard as Pence could hit it….and yes, lots of blood.
