The Phillies infielders are dropping like flies

Mar 20, 2012, 4:30 PM EDT

Phillies Astros Baseball

The Phillies are already missing 3/4 of their infield due to injuries.  Now it looks like the carnage is extending to the backup infielders too:  Michael Martinez has a broken bone in his foot.

Freddy Galvis is suddenly the starting second baseman, so he’s not a bench infield option, which means that the Phillies are gonna need some utility help soon.

And maybe an armed escort for Jimmy Rollins.

Pete Orr, come one down, you’re the next contestant. Seriously, if anyone had to get injured, Mini-Mart is probably the most replaceable player there is.

    • skerney - Mar 20, 2012 at 4:50 PM

Mini-Mart? Really?! Chooch, Cholly, Ryno, Polly, Doc, Lefty, Sarge, JRoll, Sleepy, Bashful, Dopey…
Phillies fans, is it really necessary to Michael Martinez a nickname?

      • Jonny 5 - Mar 21, 2012 at 8:25 AM

        LMAO!!!

So, What’s a good one for Pence, or is he Dopey? And you missed the Flyin’ Hawaiian.

See Amaro, that’s why you need to have a balance between spending in expensive free agents and having a good farm. Good luck getting some cheap infielders.

    • ame123 - Mar 20, 2012 at 4:45 PM

Martinez is below replacement level, no need to get anyone.

      • mattjg - Mar 20, 2012 at 7:46 PM

But do the Phillies have any replacement-level players with whom to replace him?

      • ame123 - Mar 20, 2012 at 8:31 PM

Orr, then Frandsen I guess. Remember we’re talking about a backup to a backup to a backup here.

Twice already I have said that us Phils phans will look back at the end of the year and wonder why the team didn’t do more this offseason to sign a veteran infielder. Granted, I said that b/c I was fearful of Martinez having to start 120 games due to other injuries. But, now it may be worse.

Now playng first base, Bugs Bunny, now playing second base, Bugs Bunny, now playing third base, Bugs Bunny…in this case can Hunter Pence be Bugs Bunny????

The Phillies will play opening day with approximately 2 1/2 dudes who can honestly be considered “everyday players.”

    Let’s go Phils!!!!!!

I’m sure the Yankees would would be willing to part with Ramiro Pena. I think Hamels and Mayberry would be fair compensation,

    • proudlycanadian - Mar 20, 2012 at 5:01 PM

      Got to think big.

      • uyf1950 - Mar 20, 2012 at 5:11 PM

Why not. Apparently the thumbs down folks have no sense of humor.

    • Kevin S. - Mar 20, 2012 at 5:45 PM

      Nunez for Brown. Cheap!

      • uyf1950 - Mar 20, 2012 at 6:00 PM

The trouble with moving Nunez is the Yankees don’t have anyone to replace him.

  5. WhenMattStairsIsKing - Mar 20, 2012 at 4:58 PM

Want Blake DeWitt? You can have him.

  6. ramblingphilliesfan - Mar 20, 2012 at 5:01 PM

Can’t say I didn’t foresee the Valdez trade coming back to haunt them.

    • ame123 - Mar 20, 2012 at 5:12 PM

Valdez isnt any good at baseball, why would it haunt anyone?

  7. proudlycanadian - Mar 20, 2012 at 5:02 PM

The Jays have a spare middle infielder.

    • proudlycanadian - Mar 20, 2012 at 6:19 PM

Luis Vabuena is unlikely to make the Jays roster, but would be a decent reserve for somebody.

  8. drunkenhooliganism - Mar 20, 2012 at 5:09 PM

Is frandsen still on the team? He might be better than orr or martinez.

  9. skerney - Mar 20, 2012 at 5:10 PM

The Phillies infield will be fine, Polanco and Rollins are never hurt.

    • chadjones27 - Mar 20, 2012 at 5:54 PM

Oh Sarcasm, my dear friend. I did miss you.

  10. cintiphil - Mar 20, 2012 at 6:45 PM

I think the Phils are in bigger trouble than most think. If Hamels and Co. don’t get their act together, they will fall to the Braves.

    • ame123 - Mar 20, 2012 at 8:33 PM

so you’re saying the Phillies will finish 4th in the division?

  11. paul621 - Mar 20, 2012 at 9:33 PM

Isn’t Frandsen the guy who calls the games on the radio?

  12. ch0psuey - Mar 21, 2012 at 12:35 AM

Take O-Dawg. Just be sure to remind him how many outs there are at all times.

  13. jroll01971 - Mar 21, 2012 at 4:05 AM

This is the same situation every year it’s kind of scary to start a year so hurt

  14. jamiek2012 - Mar 21, 2012 at 7:32 AM

As a Rays fan, I can tell you that great starting pitching can overcome a mediocre to bad offense. Just tread water until you get the calvary back and they will be poised to make a run in the second half.
