Rangers don’t want Yu Darvish facing the Angels in a spring training game

This certainly isn’t unheard of, but it’s still interesting.

T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports that Yu Darvish will pitch in a minor-league game Sunday instead of facing the Angels in a big-league game because the Rangers want to avoid giving their AL West rivals a look at their new ace.

Manager Ron Washington told Sullivan that not having Darvish travel for a road game was also a factor, but there’s definitely some gamesmanship involved too and the two teams won’t have their first regular season matchup until May 11.

This shall be an epic match-up whenever they play. Think of the amazing pitcher duels, which may trump the hitter duels, but who the F knows. Both teams are friggin powerhouses…

Um – what about the Rangers giving their so-called ace a look at the hitters their main rivals for the division will be deploying against them? Seems to me the test could work both ways. This isn’t “gamesmanship” in the form described by Johann Huizinga in Homo Ludens. This is “Mickey Mouse” in the form described by Uncle Walt and countless grunts. I wonder if Mickey Mouse wears a Ron Washington wristwatch.

If it’s to keep the lid on their new “Ace”, B.S. There will be tons of scout reports and film on this guy.

If it’s to keep him away from that potent lineup, what a fragile guy.

Either way, it makes Yu look like a big wussy.

‘Road game?’ It’s 33 miles door to door. Less than an hour with traffic. Just a sad excuse.
