I was referring solely to the cocky, entitled, my-sh!t-don’t-stink attitude. I haven’t heard anything regarding Harper and alcohol/drugs.

It’s easy to make these judgments using hindsight, but the fact is that most high school phenoms (or people who are exceptionally good at what they do) all have some potentially narcissistic traits about them because they have not yet failed in life. Every challenge set before them they have easily conquered. They’re the ones who hit .800/.850/.1100 during a high school season. They’re the ones who average 18Ks per game. They have girls falling all over them. They have coaches and scouts telling them how great they are going to be. The world is their oyster.

What separates those who make it and those who do not is work ethic, the ability to tolerate failure, and, if we’re being honest, a lot of luck. After being told his whole life that he would be a star, when Bush struggled, he had to deal with the reality that even he can fail. That even he can struggle. And oftentimes, you cannot measure the true character of an individual until they confront adversity. You can try (which is part of the reason scouts are employed), but it is a crapshoot.

Anybody remember the number 2 pick in 04′? Just some fellow by the name of Justin Verlander. I heard he was pretty good. I think the Padres missed the boat on that one. The Tigers must feel like the luckiest team on earth. I’m sure they would’ve picked that kid if JV went first.

I’m presumably gonna pick up bushels of thumbs down for saying this, but I would not be unhappy to see Matt Bush suffer the same fate as Josh Hancock. When you have shown yourself to be that selfish and that unable to control your substance abuse, it’s best for all that you excuse yourself from the planet so you don’t hurt anyone else.

Matt Bush has alcohol addiction layered over a narcissistic personality. He sabotages his progress and faith. Wonder how the Padres failed to see his character flaws at draft time. Of course, they couldn’t have known all this was coming but there had to be signs that he struggled with maturity.
