Miguel Cabrera is going to have his injured eye examined tomorrow, but if you hear him tell it, it’s just a formality:

“I’ll be ready. Don’t worry. I don’t feel any pain, nothing. The next day, I was feeling good. I was a little sore and swelling, but I was like normal. I was [feeling] like I was going to be OK very soon.”

He says his vision is fine too, so there’s a chance he’s going to be ready for Opening Day.

Well that’s good news, especially about his vision being ok. Maybe helmets with visors should be mandatory for Spring Training? Lotta guys seem to get pasted in the face during games that don’t matter.

If we’re gonna make mandatory extra safety equipment during spring training, why not use that gear year-round, and keep people from getting hurt during the games that do matter?

(I’m not necessarily advocating for or against any safety measures, just thinking aloud)

Yeah, that scraping sound you hear is the “Baseball Purists” sharpening their long knives. The reactionary element isn’t going to like this much. I wonder if the way to make this work is by getting it introduced in ST, perhaps as optional equipment, then maybe as equipment for guys who choose wear it as they make their way back from injury in the regular season, and then only in certain situations and positions.
All in all, I’m not sure how best to make things safer in baseball, but balls to the head and face, when they happen, sure make for horrific injuries.
