Nyjer Morgan in a “catmance”

Mar 27, 2012, 3:45 PM EDT

I have a cat. I have always had cats. I always will. I don’t care what you think about that. Cats rule. If you like this blog, know that about 65% of the posts I do are written with a cat either on my lap or laying on the desk between me and the keyboard. Just … deal with it.

Nyjer Morgan loves cats too. Indeed, he says he is now in a “catmance” with his new cat, Slick Willie.  And yes, it’s a PETA promotion thing, but I don’t care. Because, again, cats:

That cat is beautiful. And yes, cats rule. I have five of them.

  2. phukyouk - Mar 27, 2012 at 3:50 PM

not sure what the fascination with cats is about…. not just you.. people in general… Dogs i can understand but cats are just selfish beings…

    • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Mar 27, 2012 at 4:05 PM

What about Laser Cats? They seem pretty selfless.

      • phukyouk - Mar 27, 2012 at 4:36 PM

Thundercats are awesome.. no idea what laser cats are

    • stlouis1baseball - Mar 27, 2012 at 4:06 PM

Cats are NOT selfish beings. Most people think and/or assume this because they have never truly owned one. I have a Cat and a Dog. My Cat is more like a dog than my Dog is.
My Cat fetches. Yep…fetches. I sit in my chair…throw something (typically a straw or waded up piece of paper) and he fetches it and drops it in my lap. Further he comes to me when called…and I can pat my legs while standing and he (Sam)…will immediately come over and put his paws up on my legs like a Dog will. When I get home every evening from work he also follows me around the house whinning like a little kid until I sit down so he can sit in my lap. If he has to go to the litter box (in the mud room)…he meows until we let him out (just like a dog barking). He does this no matter the time of day. He also waits around the corner outside of my Wife and I’s bedroom (EVERY MORNING)…to attack me when I get up to go outside to have a smoke. Then…when I come back in…he attacks me again. He is actually a little shit. And he knows it. My wife and kids complain cause’ he thinks I am the the one running things and can’t get enough of me.

      • bigharold - Mar 27, 2012 at 4:19 PM

Maybe not selfish but certainly indifferent. And, our family always had cats.

Dogs are certainly better than cats.

      • paperlions - Mar 27, 2012 at 4:41 PM

        All beings are selfish beings.

Dogs are selfish in that their interested always are oriented toward what is good for dogs; never do they have your interests in mind…just the consequences of their actions. Learning tricks/commands is good because it results in treats or praise/safety (and a lack of violence from the less patient/understanding owners). Dogs are pack animals and do enjoy company, but don’t confuse that with them being selfless or somehow interested in anything but what is good/fun for dogs.

So, cats are not selfish. And you evidenced this by giving examples of your own cat… which acts like a dog.

Most cats don’t act like that. They act like… well, they act like cats.

  3. skipperxc - Mar 27, 2012 at 3:53 PM

Good lord do we need baseball soon.

    • stlouis1baseball - Mar 27, 2012 at 4:07 PM

No doubt Skipper. We need baseball soon. Very soon.

  4. Chris St. John - Mar 27, 2012 at 3:54 PM

Cats are awesome because you have to work to gain their trust and they have more personality. I do love dogs too, though.

What bugs me most about this video is the way Morgan pronounces “Wisconsin” like there’s and “e”, “WESconsin.” Nope.

  5. philsbirdsflyers - Mar 27, 2012 at 3:57 PM

Dogs think they are human; cats think they are God.

    • stlouis1baseball - Mar 27, 2012 at 4:08 PM

No doubt Philly. Mine certainly thinks he is…until I come home. Then he worships me like a pharoah. It’s really pretty sickening.

  6. cur68 - Mar 27, 2012 at 3:59 PM

I don’t mind cats. I’ve got a dog, but I’ve been around lots of cats. My dog, a border collie, possesses may fine qualities that remind me cats: agility, dexterity of paw, ability to climb trees. I admire them. They got class, they’re clean, they’re independent, and if they like you, you can consider yourself touched with the favour of a being that feels no particular urge to like anyone. Some of my happiest childhood memories revolve around such a relationship.

I think better of Nyjer seeing as that cat seems to like him right back.

  7. El Bravo - Mar 27, 2012 at 3:59 PM

Dogs, cats, they’re all awesome. Nyjer is awesome for this video although Peta sucks in a lot of ways b/c they’ve ruined their own brand. Perhaps Nyjer is just what they need to fix their PR problem….or not…ok, this thing is just weird all around. I’m going to have to digest all of this longer…

  8. l0yalr0yal - Mar 27, 2012 at 4:00 PM

This is not the only black cat in the news as of late. This black cat got shot by a brown and white (Tabby) cat, the tabby cat walked away and now a whole litter of black cats have rallied, formed a colony with the black panthers, and posted a high amount of meow mix for the capture of the brown and white cat.

    • stlouis1baseball - Mar 27, 2012 at 4:10 PM

No doubt Royal. Mine is also all black. As a White guy…your post now has me worried.

    • El Bravo - Mar 27, 2012 at 4:21 PM

Definitely too soon. Calling hispanics tabby is new though…

    • l0yalr0yal - Mar 27, 2012 at 5:19 PM

Fail. Sorry. Sensitive subject. The media is turning the whole thing in to quite the circus. I’ve seen people threatening other people on Facebook, it’s got everyone riled up. I’m trying to quietly stand against the wall until the truth comes out. There are too many questions and holes in each side of the story. I thought as a country we were over that racism thing. This has reignited the whole thing and if you watch the media carefully, they’re playing right in to what we need to move away from. CNN did a poll asking “Do you think Zimmerman is guilty?”, but they also asked “What ethnicity are you?, which is total horse crap. They’re feeding the fire.

As for the “Tabby” reference, I only use it because Zimmerman is referred to as being “Mexican American”. So, you know, brown and white. “Mexican American” pisses me off.

I was under the impression that if you’re in America, you’re American, regardless of what color you are.

  9. 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Mar 27, 2012 at 4:13 PM

Sure he has an ego and some of his antics are bizarre, but it’s not like he’s offending anyone or showing bad sportsmanship or, you know, doing stuff that usually warrants hating an athlete. He seems like a kid having the time of his life on the field. How can you hate that?

    • illegalblues - Mar 28, 2012 at 10:33 AM

word up! baseball is entertainment and Nyjer is one of the funnest guys to watch play the game. come on, folks. it’s still just a kids game.

  10. Jonny 5 - Mar 27, 2012 at 4:15 PM

My Cat has breath like that of a dirty bunghole. Not the wine/ whiskey barrel bunghole either.

    • El Bravo - Mar 27, 2012 at 4:25 PM

Oh do tell, how are you so familiar with dirty bungholes, Beavis?

      • Jonny 5 - Mar 27, 2012 at 4:31 PM

        huhuhu..huhuhuhuhu. bungholes…..

      • El Bravo - Mar 27, 2012 at 4:57 PM

        The great cornholio needs teepee!

  11. bigharold - Mar 27, 2012 at 4:16 PM

I like cats too. It gives my boxer something to chase around the house.

Save the thumbs down, .. the cat likes the chase too.

    • stlouis1baseball - Mar 27, 2012 at 4:24 PM

Hahaha! Good job on the qualification Harold. You know they were getting ready to pounce on the thumbs down!

  12. stex52 - Mar 27, 2012 at 4:31 PM

I buy the general argument. No one who has a cat or dog that likes them can be totally bad. I like either, but have had enough pets for this life.

  13. shawndc04 - Mar 27, 2012 at 4:43 PM

Hmm. It would be interesting to see your cat “laying on the desk.” Usually they do their “laying” elsewhere. I have five cats and a dog and the cats can be seen lying on the desk at times but never laying there. Of course they’ve all been fixed.

  14. dowhatifeellike - Mar 27, 2012 at 5:00 PM

Apparently there is still a stigma about black cats. It’s supposedly harder for shelters to find people to take them.

A few years ago I rescued three feral kittens while working in west Baltimore. They were ~4 weeks old and covered in fleas (the water ran red when I bathed them the first few times). Two were completely black and named Snoop and Flava Flav (both girls); the third was a tuxedo named Tennessee. After fixing them up and getting them vaccinated, I found homes for them.

The cat I have now (another rescue) is very much like a dog. She always greets us at the door when we come home, she’ll come when called, and she always curls up next to me at night. She often jumps in my lap and sleeps or sits between me and the keyboard when she wants attention. She’s very vocal and has a lot of personality.

I like dogs too, but I don’t have a yard nor the desire to get up extra early to take one for a walk. When I buy a house, I’ll get a dog.

  15. okwhitefalcon - Mar 27, 2012 at 5:10 PM

Geez, opening day can’t get here soon enough.

  16. b7p19 - Mar 27, 2012 at 5:15 PM

I prefer dogs because they can go outside with you. Run with you. Catch a frisbee. Swim in the ocean. Help you hunt. Ect…

  17. paul621 - Mar 27, 2012 at 5:25 PM

Wait, the cat is on your lap? How does that work, I thought bloggers didn’t wear pants? I hope he’s declawed, in case he ever gets startled.

  18. cur68 - Mar 27, 2012 at 6:19 PM

Just found this on OTB. Relevant because that cat needs a home and watch him outwit that dog.

    • bigharold - Mar 27, 2012 at 11:53 PM

I told you “the cat likes the chase”.

  19. randygnyc - Mar 27, 2012 at 7:20 PM

Dog person here. Have always made them paramount in my life. Not just family, but immediate family, lol. Anyway, the only cats I’m interested are 400 lbs and rule Africa.

  20. patg1041 - Mar 27, 2012 at 9:03 PM

So your Mom not only lets you live in the basement, but have pets too? You have it made man.

  21. lostsok - Mar 27, 2012 at 10:51 PM

My wife and I have had several abandoned rescue litters (bottle feeding every 4 hours for the first week…as exhausting as an infant, albeit for a shorter time) and still have many we saved. Good for Nyjer.

    Spay and neuter your cats!!!

  22. illegalblues - Mar 28, 2012 at 10:32 AM

Animals are awesome, it’s not their fault that PETA can be completely unself-aware a majority of the time. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL ANIMAL SHELTER

  23. professor59 - Mar 28, 2012 at 12:02 PM

I like both cats and dogs, and they mostly seem to like me, too. But I’ll only own cats because I am not getting up at the crack of dawn to walk them in all kinds of weather. Scooping a box every couple of days – I can do.

And cats are only as standoffish as they are allowed to be. I trained mine like stlouisbaseball above. He came when I called, jumped off my lap when I snapped my fingers, and greeted me at all times.

If you have one cat and he is aloof, get another one. Then they both have to compete for your attention. Plus it keeps them from being bored and keeps their weight down from because of the extra play.
