Dusty Baker is still trying to decide who will be asked to replace Ryan Madson as closer, but in the meantime free agent reliever Mike Gonzalez worked out for the Reds yesterday.

Mark Sheldon of described it as an “audition” and says Gonzalez “was spotted throwing in a bullpen session at the Reds’ complex.”

Sean Marshall, Bill Bray, and Aroldis Chapman (if he doesn’t win a rotation spot) mean the Reds have no shortage of left-handed relievers, but Gonzalez is certainly one of the few remaining free agents with decent upside and threw 53 innings with a 4.39 ERA and 51/21 K/BB ratio last year.

Sign Mike, don’t sign Mike, whatever…I think the fact that Chapman STILL doesn’t know whether he’ll be a starter (where his talent will, you know, maximize) or a reliever is ludicrous. Talk about messing with a pitcher’s mind and prep.

sure sign him,the fact he is still a free agent at the end of spring training shows there lots of upside to him.

They may have no options now. Walt will have to sign someone now that Masset is out. they had better act fast.

Sign him if you want a head case who tries to pitch through injuries by not telling anyone he’s hurt.
