The regular season is underway

Mar 28, 2012, 6:20 AM EDT

Japan Game

I’m watching the Mariners-A’s game on  It just began a couple of minutes ago. The Root sports broadcasters are doing the game via video while back home in Seattle. That’s special.

Ichiro came to bat with two outs in the first inning, worked the count full off Brandon McCarthy and then chopped one off the turf over McCarthy’s head for an infield hit.  How very Ichiro.  Then Justin Smoak struck out.

The A’s are just coming to bat. Yoenis Cespedes is batting seventh for some reason.

Baseball at 6:20 AM?  That’s OK. Works for me.

Thje grand old game! As American as sushi rolls and Subarus.

    • WhenMattStairsIsKing - Mar 28, 2012 at 10:43 AM

Who on EARTH would thumbs down that comment? This is a baseball blog, and baseball has begun! Whoever reads this and thumbs down a simple exclaimation of baseball is a freak.

      • Utley's Hair - Mar 28, 2012 at 10:45 AM

My money’s on cup0pizza the vehemently vociferous contrarian.

      Honey Nut Ichiros!

  3. thehypercritic - Mar 28, 2012 at 6:28 AM

I was incredibly excited for the return of baseball. I turned my TV on at 3am and started looking. And looking…

Not on ESPN, Fox or even MLB Network.

Only Bud Selig and major league baseball would be so aggressively anti-fan as to open the season as a huge event in Japan — and not televise it nationally.

It’s not as bad as the extra wild card or trying to sully a superstar’s reputation and thus the game’s image after Braun was found not to have violated the PED policy, but it’s damn close.

    • vallewho - Mar 28, 2012 at 7:06 AM

what a sham. and it starts at the top with the comish.

    • alexandercartwright - Mar 28, 2012 at 7:06 AM

No ESPN or MLB Network? Oh that’s right I can tune into MLB.TV for every out of market game, problem solved.

      • phillyphreak - Mar 28, 2012 at 7:25 AM

You could. But some find that extra expense too much. Even only for 19.99 for a month it may not be worth it just to watch one game. Conversely, one could by GameDay Audio for 19.99/season. Regardless, it doesn’t excuse not televising the first game of baseball.

      • alexandercartwright - Mar 28, 2012 at 8:57 AM

Another reason why MLB falls behind the NFL. Their fans just open up their wallets, lay down and take it to Roger Goodell & his DirectTV Sunday package yet MLB fans whine like women if Bud Selig makes you for a far better product. Everyday, every post there’s constant complaining on this site, makes me even wonder are y’all even fans??

      • Utley's Hair - Mar 28, 2012 at 10:44 AM

So NFL fans behaving like lemmings or sheep make them better than MLB fans? Interesting point there. I never realized that the presence of a spine proved that.

      • phillyphreak - Mar 28, 2012 at 10:54 AM

I have the same problem with the Direct TV package…out of my budget. But there are a few other things to address:

        1) Baseball is actually an incredibly healthy sport, and in my opinion, is leaps and bounds more interesting and better than football.

        2) Can you imagine the outrage the NFL fans would have if the opening game of the season wasn’t even available on a national radio broadcast without paying?

  4. proudlycanadian - Mar 28, 2012 at 6:46 AM

    Any Amanda McCarthy sightings yet?

    • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Mar 28, 2012 at 8:35 AM

      Brandon is one lucky guy

      • El Bravo - Mar 28, 2012 at 9:33 AM

Is a boobz comment too obvious? Booooooooooobz.

  5. paperlions - Mar 28, 2012 at 6:50 AM

See….I would have said, “Cespedes is on the MLB roster for some reason.”

    • cur68 - Mar 28, 2012 at 7:32 AM

But you have. All off season. Now we begin to find out if you were on to something. Personally, I’m rooting for the kid. However, I suspect you’re right. I’d like to be wrong. C’mon, Shirtless Guy Batting 7th!

      • paperlions - Mar 28, 2012 at 4:29 PM

Hey, as soon as some one tells me why or there is some evidence he belongs there, I’ll stop wondering about it.

      • cur68 - Mar 28, 2012 at 5:42 PM

We’ll need to revisit all this in about 2 months I’d think.

  6. cktai - Mar 28, 2012 at 6:57 AM

Baseball at 12:10 in the afternoon? That’s sure to kill my working day 😀

    Home run Ackley 😮

    • foreverchipper10 - Mar 28, 2012 at 12:16 PM

I now lead my fantasy league in HR’s! Woo!

  7. phukyouk - Mar 28, 2012 at 6:57 AM

HAPPY 2012 and best of luck to everyone!

  8. paperlions - Mar 28, 2012 at 7:06 AM

Why in the world is the worst hitter on the Mariners leading off? I know people love to give managers credit for teams winning…well, one of the reasons it is so easy for me to believe that managers have greater ability to hurt a team’s chances of winning is all of the guys hitting leadoff around MLB that should be batting 8th or 9th. Last year a sure HOF manager spent the year with guys that had OBPs of .321 and .316 with no power leading off.

  9. losangelasbasketball - Mar 28, 2012 at 7:09 AM

Padres are going to win the WS with 58 million bucks…. 100% positive here….

  10. Baseball Beer Burritos In That Order - Mar 28, 2012 at 7:46 AM

If someone were able to give me a hint so I could maybe fish for some baseball games in some kind of linear waterpath….

  11. Jonny 5 - Mar 28, 2012 at 8:09 AM

I heard on the radio that Ichiro had 3 infield hits so far today. I hope he got his mojo back.

    • Utley's Hair - Mar 28, 2012 at 10:47 AM

200 hits by the All Star break!!!!!

  12. cur68 - Mar 28, 2012 at 8:27 AM

Someone pointed out yesterday that whomever wins this game, that team is leading the Majors in wins. By contrast, the other team is leading in losses. Given the 2 clubs involved one scenario will be quite unique and the other…yeah, not so much. Shirtless Guy Batting 7th got a hit, though. Yay, Shirtless Guy!

  13. cur68 - Mar 28, 2012 at 8:48 AM

Hey, anyone know if the game will end in a tie after the 10th? I just saw Mr. Baseball (I was bored and baseball starved: forgive me) and they mentioned that Japanese ball games end after 10 innings regardless of score. Will they keep going because this is an MLB game?

    • cur68 - Mar 28, 2012 at 8:53 AM

Never mind. 11th inning on the way.

  14. cur68 - Mar 28, 2012 at 8:49 AM

Hey! Cowgill’s TOOTBLAN. 1st TOOTBLAN of the season.

  15. Francisco (FC) - Mar 28, 2012 at 9:16 AM

    Ichiro’s batting .800, He’s got real Home Field advantage…

  16. El Bravo - Mar 28, 2012 at 9:31 AM

So I was droppin’ a duece first thing this morning and as usual, my phone took the trip with me so that I could check email and play words with friends while evacuating my bowels. I had a solid evacuation (there’s a pun there), but took a few moments to get going, you know, being the morning and all. Given the extra time, I decided to pop open the HBT app, which mentioned the game was on, and I had totally forgotton, you know, being the morning and all. Next I wiped. Then I fired up the laptop, went to, which led me to a headline “ now on XBox 360”, which led me to my XBOX 360 in total glee, which also led me to download the new HBOGo app as well [insert ‘Game of Thrones’ shout out here]. Basically, Craig your post made my friggin’ day between shittin’ and showerin’…thanks, brah.

    • cur68 - Mar 28, 2012 at 9:34 AM

      TMI. Like WAY TMI.

      • Francisco (FC) - Mar 28, 2012 at 9:49 AM

Aha! YOUR Achilles heel…. hmmm, should I tell you in exquisite detail how I changed my daughter yesterday?

      • cur68 - Mar 28, 2012 at 9:50 AM

No. Definitely not. Hand over Bautista, though, and you can go on and on about it if you like. C’mon, there’s an MVPee in it for you…

      • Francisco (FC) - Mar 28, 2012 at 1:05 PM

I notice we’re still exchanging poop and pee jokes.

      • cur68 - Mar 28, 2012 at 1:12 PM

That’s ’cause I’m not above crappy puns.

      • El Bravo - Mar 28, 2012 at 9:57 AM

What can I say, I’m a productive pooper. If I were President, most of my important calls to other state leaders would be from the nearest shitter. I think best in that situation.

      • cur68 - Mar 28, 2012 at 10:01 AM

Clearly you are interpreting “TMI” to mean “tell me more”. For the love of dog, please stop that. And FYI, the whole Presidential Bathroom Decision Making was pioneered by many, many oval orifice holder before you. LBJ springs readily to mind. Didn’t wash his hands, either.

      • El Bravo - Mar 28, 2012 at 10:08 AM

“Where there is a poo, there is a way” I believe that’s how the saying goes.

      • Utley's Hair - Mar 28, 2012 at 10:51 AM

El Bravo as President? That can NEVER happen!!!!

What do we want? CAKE for national dessert!!!! When do we want it? NOW!!!!!

      • cur68 - Mar 28, 2012 at 10:53 AM

What do want him to DO?? Wash his hands and stop telling the world about his bathroom habits! When do we want it? NOW!

      • Utley's Hair - Mar 28, 2012 at 10:55 AM

Meh…I deal with that stuff a few times a day myself, so I’m a bit numb to the topic. CAKE vs. (pie), on the other hand…

      • El Bravo - Mar 28, 2012 at 11:35 AM

First order of business: LET THEM EAT PIE! (which I will proclaim while taking the Browns to the Super Bowl)

  17. rickset - Mar 28, 2012 at 10:11 AM

“Finally Baseball has Returned” – maybe the best pharse ever?

  18. AlohaMrHand - Mar 28, 2012 at 10:18 AM

We must still be angry with Japan about Pearl Harbor. Why else would we send Oakland and Seattle over there to play a game?Yeech

    • cltjump - Mar 28, 2012 at 10:51 AM

  19. rcali - Mar 28, 2012 at 11:16 AM

So now we are outsourcing our baseball too? Lovely. Great idea, two less games for people to make money in Seattle or Oakland.
