I like Montero for what he is, but he’s nuts if he thinks he’s worth that kind of money. I would let him walk and get a good defensive catcher (which he never will be) for less than half the money.

A bit of an advantage in that there are so few quality catchers…….offensively. But he is too unpredictable, especially since he has already missed big chunks of past seasons due to injury.

Victor Martinez has had one season since 2004 with an OPS lower than .832, and it was a season where he was injured. That season, 2008, is the only season since 2004 he has taken less than 300 AB.

I like the guy’s production but it isn’t nearly good enough (nor consistent enough…3 times dbl digit home runs in 5 years, only two years over 100 gms played, never over .300) to warrant that kind of deal.

The league is riddled with catchers that have a good year and get a big contract and then decline. The talent offensively is very rare at that position recently. Montero needs to have another solid year at least before any club should give him victor type money.
