As to Padilla, Bobby V considered him the 6th or 7th best starter in camp. His failure to beat out Doubront and Bard doesn’t mean he’s useless. Aceves would be better in the bullpen in a vacuum, but if two starters go down, he’d be more valuable in the rotation. They’re both fine 6/7 starters.

I’m not really concerned about Boston’s pitching depth. It’s much better than last year, when they had ask Lackey to pitch with a torn arm and threw Kyle Weiland out there, and all kindsa shenanigans.

Listen we can all find examples of this pitcher or that pitcher that made the transition. But you know the flip side of that coin? We can all find examples of pitchers that did NOT make the transition successfully. I guess we all have to wait and see. Have a good day.

I’m also not sure why you’re so hung up on innings totals. Big jumps in innings are only demonstrably an issue for very young pitchers. Do you think that relievers don’t switch to starting and pitch 150+ innings? Because they do. Or that Buchholz’s injury is a warning sign? It isn’t; it’s not an injury that recurs after surgery.

Having 0 IP in 2010 didn’t stop Colon from having a very good year last year, and Hughes has a chance to do well despite averaging 89 innings over his 5 years in the majors. (Only one of which was spent in relief, and that was more IP than all but one of his SP years.)

And until Dice K comes back when and if he comes back they really have no fall back position in case of an injury. That is unless you count Padilla.
