Tweet(s) of the Day: April Fools’ in Cardinals camp

Apr 1, 2012, 2:39 PM EST

April Fools’ Day jokes are usually pretty lame or far too predictable, but Cardinals first baseman Lance Berkman just pulled off a zinger on right-hander Adam Wainwright in the third inning of Sunday’s Grapefruit League game against the Nationals. St. Louis Post-Dispatch scribe Joe Strauss tweeted the highlights:

The game isn’t being televised, so we’ll just have to hope someone got good video of the prank. While we wait for that, a replay of the elaborate fake Kyle Kendrick trade from a few springs back:

Here’s a bit more detailed account from Derrick Goold, well played Puma.

“JUPITER, Fla. — Before the top of the third inning, a white 2009 Chevy Silverado drove out onto the warning truck of Roger Dean Stadium as the pa announcer detailed how that truck — that very truck — would be given away to a fan in the stands. They could take ownership of the truck as it reached the home dugout.

A name was announced, and the father and son ran gleefully toward the Cardinals dugout to take their prize.

    The truck was Adam Wainwright’s.

The whole hoax was setup by Lance Berkman.

    He was driving.

Berkman poked his head out just as the winners climbed into the bed of the truck. Wainwright did a double-take as the truck drove onto the field, but he never emerged from the dugout, moving instead back to the bench and out of view as his teammates looked to him for a reaction.

It’s April Fools’ Day. In hindsight, we should have expected Berkman to try and pull something.”

Twenty years ago, Joe Carter pulled the same prank on rookie teammate Derek Bell on Fan Appreciation Day in Toronto. It wouldn’t surprise me if Puma had been waiting since then for the right moment to try it himself.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. That is so lame to copy it.

Come on Hittfamily. What is “so lame” is you taking something fun and humorous and hating on it.

How did Berkman get Waino’s keys? Dont they lock this stuff up?

Ok, maybe not using nicknames would make this a tad clearer. I have no idea who Puma is. Maybe I should, but I don’t. Still hilarious, though.

Puma is Phat Elvis. Everyone knows that.

Perfect Cur. By the way, ever get to Red Deer?

Drove through it the other week on the way to Calgary.
