UPDATE: Despite thumb injury, Bobby Valentine expects Josh Beckett to make his first start

Apr 2, 2012, 10:29 AM EDT

UPDATE:  If you believe Bobby Valentine, it seems that maybe it’s not too bad:

10:29 AM:  Josh Beckett has an issue with his thumb and that may cause Alfredo Aceves to take his Game 2 start.  We know this because Aceves said so:

No word yet on what the thumb issue is or how long it could keep Beckett out, but he is leaving Florida for San Antonio to get it checked out.

I just read this on ESPN Boston

    ESPNBoston.com Updated: April 2, 2012, 11:03 AM ET
Boston Red Sox starter Josh Beckett is headed to San Antonio to have a thumb injury examined, the team confirmed Monday morning, and is questionable to make his first start of the season in Detroit on April 7.

This season is already shaping up to be an EPIC clusterbleep, and it hasn’t even started.

Bill Papi told him just to rub some milkshake on it.

Let’s hope Josh’s going out there doesn’t irritate the injury more.

Perhaps the Playstation last season was a thumb-conditioning exercise.

    Kind of curious…
I am assuming the team absorbs the cost of the first-class ticket to San Antonio for Beckett’s thumb?

What would a team spend on medical related bills in a season? Is it covered by insurance? Even first-class flights and hotels?
