They want to lean all up on top of the strike zone, but god forbid they get hit in the elbow.

Without trying to be a mind reader, I suggest it is usually pretty easy to tell. A lot of inside stuff starts off about where is should be and dives in suddenly, usually toward the legs. It’s a rare pitcher who can do that on purpose. A lot is also situational. A guy who is ahead in the count or has people on base and hits someone is so dumb he needs to be cut. What’s a better put-down than striking a guy out?

Usually the ones I see that are no-doubters are straight, flat, and hit the batter in the ribs or back. If you watch the pitcher’s expression on the replay, that’s a pretty good clue, too. Quite a few will telegraph the fact that a pitch didn’t go where they meant.

If I can do that, I think your average umpire can do it better.

He should try to appeal some of his starts from the last season and a half and try and get MLB to take some of the earned runs off some of them.

As an Indians fan I’m not sure how to feel about all of this.

Either it was unintentional and I’m concerned about Ubaldo’s lack of command.

Or it was on purpose and I’m relieved he finally hit something he was aiming at this spring.

That is not what I said. I said either they need to suspend every pitcher who ever hits a guy or pretend they are able to discern intention. Any pitcher who wants to succeed has to pitch inside effectively. Batters expecting an outside pitch lean in so they can reach it with authority. Sometimes batters guess outside when a pitcher is coming inside. Bottom line:guys will get hit occasionally. Up and in where you could hit the head and kill a guy is clearly wrong. If you miss on an inside pitch to the mid section of the body you’ll usually just leave a healthy bruise.

They will have to grant his appeal or pretend they can read minds and know a man’s intention. Otherwise they will have to start suspending every guy who hits a batter.
