His OBP and defense elevated him above sluggers like Youkilis, Konerko and Teixeira. Both fangraphs and baseball-reference give Barton about 1 WAR just for defense that year. There’s more than one way to provide good production. If you’re going to slam Barton for a low slugging %, pick a year in which he didn’t do enough else to make up for it.
