The Red Sox open up with $57 million on the disabled list

Apr 4, 2012, 10:00 PM EDT

Carl Crawford Reuters

Here’s the list:

Carl Crawford – $19.5 million
John Lackey – $15.25 million
Daisuke Matsuzaka – $10 millon
Bobby Jenks – $6 million
Andrew Bailey – $3.9 million
Andrew Miller – $1.04 million
Rich Hill – $725,000
Ryan Kalish – approx. $480,000
Chris Carpenter – approx. $480,000

It all adds up to $57.375 million, which is barely short of the approx. $62 million the Rays are spending on their entire 2012 roster. None of the players are expected back right off, either. Miller might rejoin the pen in a couple of weeks, though whether that’s a positive remains to be seen. Crawford is likely to miss most or all of April after wrist surgery. Matsuzaka is aiming for a June return from Tommy John surgery. Lackey is out for the season, and neither Jenks nor Bailey are locks to return in the second half.

    Say What???

That can’t be right, .. the Yankees are old and brittle.

    • homelanddefense - Apr 5, 2012 at 9:02 AM

I get the dig, but the funny part is most of those guys listed arent old.

  2. aceshigh11 - Apr 4, 2012 at 10:27 PM

That’s some bleeped up bleep, right there.

  3. btwicey - Apr 4, 2012 at 11:37 PM

Lol lets be honest that lackey $$ has to be top 5 worst all time. Unbelievable

    • Ari Collins - Apr 5, 2012 at 12:38 AM

Not even close to top 5 worst all time. Especially since even after this year of recovery from surgery, it’ll be only half-way done, so it’s a bit premature to call it. But even if he did nothing for the rest of the contract, he’d still not even be top 10.

      • phukyouk - Apr 5, 2012 at 9:25 AM

        Happy opening day Ari.

    • kajepage - Apr 5, 2012 at 9:29 AM

Prob wouldn’t even be top 5 if it was the yankees in the last 15 years. 4 off the top of my head and I’m sure 10 minutes of digging I can pull a 5th:
      Hideki Irabu
      Kevin Brown
      Carl Pavano
      Kei Igawa

Was thinking Randy Johnson but Lackey might be worse.

      • Glenn - Apr 5, 2012 at 4:09 PM

AJ Burnett? Jarrett Wright? Javier Vasquez? A-Rod’s will be pretty bad by the end of it.

  4. randygnyc - Apr 5, 2012 at 12:01 AM

Things are right again in the baseball world, but I’m greedy and still waiting for the other shoe to drop. Maybe we could see the concrete slab over the red sox dugout collapse on opening day?

  5. bozosforall - Apr 5, 2012 at 12:34 AM

What a crybaby article. Pouliot just exposed himself as a whiny New England type.

    • Ari Collins - Apr 5, 2012 at 12:41 AM

That’s not whiny. Stating how much money Boston’s wasting is kind of the opposite of whining.

      Also, I think he’s a Twins fan.

      • bozosforall - Apr 5, 2012 at 12:45 AM

Whiny. Just like the vast majority of Boston fans.

    • thetruth1313 - Apr 5, 2012 at 7:16 AM

And BlowsForAll just exposed himself again how much of a little biatch he really is…

      • Kevin S. - Apr 5, 2012 at 8:38 AM

Pretty sure he did that a long time ago.

    • homelanddefense - Apr 5, 2012 at 9:04 AM

you must loves balls, because you are constantly all over Boston’s nuts

  6. dirtyharry1971 - Apr 5, 2012 at 12:34 AM

they gotta get dice K back and signed to some kind of extension and they gotta get jenks back and make him the closer!! And then they are all set, i bet ace is smiling at the very thought of this. How could you not?

  7. buffalomafia - Apr 5, 2012 at 2:47 AM

    Lets go YANKEES!

  8. mianfr - Apr 5, 2012 at 2:58 AM

I mean of that $57 million, all but $4.38 million (Bailey and Kalish) seem to be bad contracts or for irrelevant players.

So I guess you can call it a very expensive addition by subtraction?

  9. hushbrother - Apr 5, 2012 at 3:16 AM

I thought Dice-K’s contract was up. What’s this owing him $10 million crap?

  10. themightyquinn1 - Apr 5, 2012 at 8:52 AM

Theo’s a genius? Here’s a list of some of his great pickups, now at the beach:

    Carl Crawford – $19.5 million
    John Lackey – $15.25 million
    Daisuke Matsuzaka – $10 millon
    Bobby Jenks – $6 million
    Andrew Miller – $1.04 million

  11. delsj - Apr 5, 2012 at 9:22 AM

$38.2M is no picnic either for the Phils. That’s still more than the Royals payroll.

  12. odj810 - Apr 5, 2012 at 9:30 AM

even though i’m a red sox fan, you can’t help but laugh. I don’t think its just a freak accident we like getting injured players.

  13. getlockedout - Apr 5, 2012 at 11:19 AM

One has to wonder how long until the Medical staff is to be held responsible? Reports are that Bailey pitched with a broken thumb for a week before he was evaluated…

  14. mascmen7 - Apr 6, 2012 at 1:25 PM

THE BOY GENIUS THEO INEPTstein has left his great legacy with the Red Sox. Huge contracts of worthless players. Great work Theo. Hope Chicago is a forgiving city. Not!
