Michael Morse and Rick Ankiel both homer in rehab game

The Nationals were forced to run Mark DeRosa and Roger Bernadina out there on Opening Day against the Cubs, but they have some reinforcements on the way.

According to Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post, Michael Morse and Rick Ankiel both homered last night in a minor league rehab game with Double-A Harrisburg.

Morse, who is recovering from a right lat muscle strain, went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run as the designated hitter. Ankiel, who is coming back from a quad injury, went 1-for-3 with a home run while playing center field. Morse is eligible to come off the disabled list Tuesday against the Mets while Ankiel could return as soon as next Friday against the Reds.

Morse is obviously of more importance here, as he has quietly been the most potent bat in the Nationals’ lineup for the past two seasons. It’s hard to imagine Davey Johnson’s squad making a serious run at the playoffs if he isn’t healthy.

Before you get excited check out what they did the night before against 27 yr old organizational pitcher Tim Bascom.

Eyes on reporting had them stupefied by Bascom’s array of junk.

so the nats suprisingly have quite a bit of depth, who gets sent down when morse and ankiel return from the dl, bernidina and tracy? nady? a pitcher? and when harper gets called up a pretty good player will be sent down or released it will be an interesting year in washington, one player they should def keep is mark deroase pending his health, he can play almost anywhere and has a good stick, someone coming off your bench like that is too valuable, and if laroche struggles at the plate again id play him and nady at first all day

Should be Bernadina sent down for sure, but Tracy has been great in 2 games, and Derosa is invaluable. Honostly im not sure who else gets sent down. But thats a good problem to have now isnt it.

Someone needs to be asking the Nats management, about Eric Komatsu. For a while now Washington has been searching for a Centerfielder. But the Cards plucked him away from the Nationals in a Rule 5 draft this past winter, and he made the 25 man roster. If you believe as I did originally that he was surreptitiously purloined by some super sleuth scout, think again. He was the minor league player of the year for the Brewers in 2010, before being moved to Washington straight up for Jerry Hairston Jr.
