We’ll see how he adjusts when the league completely figures him out. He’s struck out 7 times in 15 plate appearances, and has yet to walk. I would bank on him striking out 250 times before him hitting 40 HR.

Thanks spud, I wasn’t sure if the e was it’s own syllable or not, I haven’t heard an announcer get close to pronouncing Cespedes correctly and when I’ve heard them say Yoenis it has come out Yenis (like Venice but with a Y).

Almost got it correct PL, you are in my field of expertise now, the syllabic breakdown should however be between the n and the i.

More interesting I believe is the sudden influx of Latin players with Y beginning first names. The reason is attributed to the Communist influence in Cuba and its neighbors. It became popular to name your children similarly to Russian sounding names, therefore, Yoenis, Yuniesky, Yadier, et al.

Not so much in “Little Havana” though.

I’m horrible at writing phonetically. The “e” should be pronounced like a hard “a” and the “i” like a hard “e”. Essentially, Yo-a-nees (accent on the middle syllable).
