People win the lottery all the time, still doesn’t mean that buying lottery tickets is a “winning strategy”.

Over the course of a 162 game season, hitting Escobar 2nd and Cain 7th will create fewer runs and fewer wins. Escobar is a horrible hitter.

Aaand Escobar promptly gets on base, steals 2nd and scores a run. Escobar has a career avg over .400 against Ervin Santana – thats why he was moved up today. It had more to do with that than the career numbers Pouliot looked at before typing this post out. Carry on, nothing to see here.

Good point. Walk Hosmer so Butler (who specializes in extra-base hits) has an opportunity to drive two in.

A, protection is a myth. B, if you have a player in front of Hosmer bunt a runner over, a manager can just walk Hosmer thus the bunt takes the bat out of Hosmer’s hand. C, anytime you make a comment like “contract to what the statistical record says”, you’re most likely wrong.

The counter argument that having better hitters who can get on base at a good clip is more important in front of guys like Hosmer and Butler than it is protecting guys lower in the order. Especially when you consider how short lived an inning is going to be lower in the Kansas city order with offensive suck holes like betancourt and quintero.

I have to disagree with your assessment. Cain has a potent bat so putting him in a place where he can protect Moose makes a certain amount of sense. Escobar, contrary to what his stats say, is great at using the bunt to move runners over (see yesterday’s game against the Angels). So Yost is giving Hosmer and Butler the ability to drive Gordon in from second with only one out. Isn’t that prototypical small ball?
