It’s really not that unusual for a decent pitcher to have a dominant game. However, if Zito still has a .444 WHIP and infinity strikeout to walk ratio at the end of the season, then I’ll be impressed.

Especially with Darryl Cousins’ being known as a hitters’ umpire with his ridiculously small strike zone Zito still manages to notch a complete game shutout. Bravo.

Definitely unexpected but looking closer, maybe it should have been considered a not-to-surprising possibility.

It’s early in the season when pitchers, it’s often said, have the advantage over hitters.

Two, the Rockies are struggling to score runs.

Three, Zito came into the game with a 5-2 career mark against the Rockies. His ERA was 2.60 against them before the whitewashing.

So while shocking that Zito could throw a shutout, maybe the Rockies were the most likely of prey for such a feat.

^agreed on the unlikeliest SO comment above but Zito having success against the Rockies shouldnt be too much of a surprise – Zito hasn’t lost to the Rockies since 2008. Zito is 5-2 with a 2.60 ERA against Colorado in his career. Okay, forget it.. that was unbelievable.

I’m wondering where this would rank on the unlikeliest shutout ever list. Even when Zito was good he didn’t get shutouts (none in his 2002 Cy Young season) and this was in Coors Field.
