I think the world is pure ridiculus! Guillen, Has a mouth on him but you have to take in account what his life has been.Oh yes, he was loved when the Chisox won the world series. Now for Castro, he has allowed 2 Popes to visit. This still doesn’t excuse Cuba over Human Rights. The US has a military presense in Cuba. Castro has not pulled A Nazi on people. Everybody is so concerned about what the money says. Doesn’t truth Have a place in our world! There are limits to what people can say or write such as slander as one conservative radio host did , and liable which if proven can go to court. Now for the hoodie thing first that young man should not have been bothered so if someone who robs a bank or gas station is wearing a hoodie, what should we do assume the hoodie doesn’t exist. The martiens pulled off 911, if you believe that, perhaps you should move where there’s a Murial of your favorite dictator on the side of buildings whereever you go. I think the best thing we can do is think and not speak, just think how your signifigant other will feel if you never have anything to say. I’m so sick and tired of this person said this and this person said that. Can’t you journalist’s find something better to report on, like your personal lives.

Also the first amendment of the Constitution states that:
AMENDMENT I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
There for the freedom of speech everyone is talking about does not apply. Because it is not Congress making a law here it is his employer levying a punishment on him. Say something at your job that your employers feel is detrimental to your organization and see if you don’t get suspended, fired or a written disciplinary action taken against you.

Just so everyone knows. He was not suspended by MLB for this. He was suspended by his employers The Miami Marlins. So those complaining about MLB suspending him read up on this again. His team suspended not the big bad MLB or Bud Selig.

Damn I’m reading lots of racists comments here. What Ozzie said wasn’t horrible. But when you take into account the timing and where the new Ballpark is located it amplifies the comments.

If a manager in New York said the same thing about Hitler and the Jewish community got upset would that be ok?

I understand that Castro/Hitler are different attrocities in themselves but nontheless ruthless in their rule.

Many of you do not understand what Freedom of Speech actually means. You see in countries with dictatorships and tyrants you may be assasinated or imprissoned for speaking out. In the United States you may say what you want but it is also the right for others to disagree and voice their freedom of speech as well.

Just my opinion of the whole situation.

Actually I would imagine that Ozzie like anyone else has a clause in his contract for “Conduct detrimental to the team.” This would probably qualify.

I don’t agree with it but that’s most likely the reasoning.

I have to say, I understand the Marlins choosing to suspend him, it’s a business decision.

What I find ironic are the Cuban-Americans who are calling for Ozzie to be fired. I mean, they chose to come to America so they could have things like freedom of speech I assume. Firing someone for their personal beliefs seems like something that would happen in……I dunno….Cuba?

It’s the Marlins trying to keep fans flowing through the gates of their shiny new ballpark built smack in the middle of Miami’s “Little Havana” neighborhood.

I guess the Marlins could take a righteous free speech stance and not sanction Ozzie and then ruin their relationship with the local fan base forever . . . or they could attempt to placate their new neighbors and and try to move on.

Ozzie is not a policy maker so I agree that Cuban exiles should lighten up and not take his comments so seriously, but it’s not going to happen . . . and the Marlins absolutely had to do something.

I’m not a great lover of Castro but the last 6 US Presidents have done more for Castro by keeping US contact with the Cuban people and free trade with Cuba to a minimum than Ozzie could do in his whole lifetime. We have better relations with Vietnam now than with Cuba and we lost 55,000 US solders there in Vietnam just a few years ago.

Has anyone who is blogging here with so much hatred for Ozzie read the 1st amendment to the US Constitution lately? Free speech means little if you want to commercially punish its exercise and I can’t believe Ozzie’s contract has any clauses about unpopular political statements that are not defamatory.

Bud Selig should keep his fat overpaid mouth shut as I find that for more offensive. If he had spent a fifth of that energy on steroid abuse we would not have so many asterisks in baseball today.

Castro had fifty years. Bin Laden had an hour or two. Not comparable. Also, Bin Laden is dead now – and Castro, much to the bitterness and frustration of the exile community, is still very much alive, as is his brother. It’s harder to heal when the scabs keep getting torn off. And of course, Joe Girardi isn’t a bigmouth, didn’t say anything inflammatory about political issues, so the whole question is kinda hypothetical and won’t hold up.

I would probably sue. There are limits to what MLB can do, and I think they may have hit one of them.

Most employers like this have a morality clause or something that handles embarrassing your employer. Guillen, or you, wouldn’t have a leg to stand on.

davidpom50, I am sure you are right, but what defines conduct? That is usually VERY arbitrary, and just because some people hate Castro, does not mean that he has violated that clause. So your statement that he would “absolutely lose a lawsuit” is tenuous at best.
