Photo of the Day: It’s a beautiful day in Detroit

Apr 10, 2012, 3:00 PM EDT

Here’s Joe Maddon in the early innings of the Rays-Tigers game in Detroit, where the snow fell, the wind blew and the temperatures barely cracked 40 at game time:

A least I think he was at the game. That could be him prepping to climb Mt. Rainer or something.

They really ought to consider playing the 1st month of the season at the spring training sites in Florida and Arizona.

Beats the hell out of snow, rain or opening series in Japan!

  2. hittfamily - Apr 10, 2012 at 3:05 PM

    Joe Maddon = Awesome

    Always

  3. bigharold - Apr 10, 2012 at 3:07 PM

Somehow, Maddon doesn’t look quite such a baseball genius with his Elmer Fudd hat and a nice shade of frozen red.

  4. zombiefrankenstein - Apr 10, 2012 at 3:18 PM

Why in the heck would he be get ready to climb Mr. Rainier? Whats Mrs. Rainier going to think of this?

    • atworkident - Apr 10, 2012 at 3:21 PM

      Classic… snot bubble funny…

    • zombiefrankenstein - Apr 10, 2012 at 3:21 PM

      Aww, they fixed it…

      • cur68 - Apr 10, 2012 at 4:07 PM

Shoulda left the typo, IMO. Your comment was hilarious till he did that. Ruined a good one, Craig.

  5. steveohho - Apr 10, 2012 at 3:46 PM

Craig forgot to write “and” in between “climb and “mount.” Rainer is obviously a French girl’s first name.

Reminds me of high school tryouts in the first week of February. There’s nothing quite like trying to hit the corner with a curve when you can’t feel your fingers.

    • hittfamily - Apr 10, 2012 at 5:12 PM

Getting jammed left your fingers hurting for hours. Off the end of the bat…..days.

  7. nflfollower - Apr 10, 2012 at 3:53 PM

    4-0 sure is beautiful!

  8. bloodysock - Apr 10, 2012 at 4:06 PM

Detroit will do him good. Maddon has been out in the sun so long he looks like an Oompa Loompa.

  9. WhenMattStairsIsKing - Apr 10, 2012 at 4:11 PM

Cold weather or not, you know Maddon is still staying focused thanks to his Men’s One a Day 50+.

    • robertterwilliger - Apr 10, 2012 at 6:52 PM

      that’s a hit!

  10. rob0527 - Apr 10, 2012 at 4:21 PM

Opening games should be played in warm weather areas or start season later. Baseball is a warm weather sport and should be treated as as such. All we need is star pitcher to hurt his arm in cold weather.

    • frank433 - Apr 10, 2012 at 6:08 PM

Verlander was off today, no worries!

    • hockinj25 - Apr 11, 2012 at 12:07 AM

      Grow a pair.

  11. hasbeen5 - Apr 10, 2012 at 4:50 PM

I don’t get this either. You have Miami playing in Philly, Tampa in Detroit, Atlanta started in New York.

Spring training is in the south/desert for a reason.

  12. hittfamily - Apr 10, 2012 at 5:24 PM

It was 86 in Jacksonville. Who the heck makes out these schedules

    • frank433 - Apr 10, 2012 at 6:10 PM

More fans would show up to a 40 degree game in Detroit than any in Tampa.

      • hittfamily - Apr 10, 2012 at 8:29 PM

        Check:
        Awww Shit

  13. weaselpuppy - Apr 10, 2012 at 10:51 PM

Nope, the story isn’t the 4-0 Tigers, it’s the bad weather in Detroit…..more crap coverage….because posting something…ANYTHING about Detroit negatively is easier and lazier than writing a real story…

  14. Detroit Michael - Apr 11, 2012 at 2:10 AM

The weather was OK in Detroit yesterday. Temperature was in the low forties with a light drizzle. We haven’t had any snow since February this year.
