I was derelict in my journalistic duties last night. Rather than head down to Macondo Banana Massacre Field for the Feesh-Colt 45 game, I drove up to Stuart to hear Over the Rhine and Lucy Wainright Roche at the Lyric Theater, although to be fair to myself, if not privileges, I did spend an hour across the street and the superb Mulligan's Beach House enjoying their nonpareil ahi tuna tatki crispy thai roll with wasabi cream dressing - may the Buddha forgive me for consuming still-living flesh - enjoying the subtropical sunshine on their patio deck and reading R. A. Dickey's new bio, Anywhere I Wind Up (review to follow shortly). Ergo, I didn't catch the score and wrapup until the rainy two-hour drive back to Macondo on the (blessedly empty, post-seasonal) Turnpike. But it went something like this: Heath Bell, pitching with the stable oolitic bedrock of the Pleistocene-era Tamiami Formation beneath his feet rather than the cantankerous and unstable cotton candy and peanut brittle formations of the southern left coast, seems to have developed a mild case of the land sickness that afflicted the Mariner in Waterworld. He walked three without being scored upon, although Edward Mujica coughed up a game tying dinger to J. D. Martinez (take that, you farkin' commyooneests) in the bottom of the eighth, snatching victory from the grasp of Ricky Nolasco who has now peetched well two games in a row. That set the stage for Gabby Sanchez's boogie-off RBI double in the 11th. No Feesh has hit a home run in Macondo Banana Massacre Field as yet and Tommy remains as stolid as Gort out there in left field. Maybe I'll luck out and behold the beast brought to life for the first time tonight!

The A’s showed that it’s going to be a close race for last in the AL West last night, taking advantage of the “good” Colon and beating King Felix for the second consecutive outing. Colon was sharp on the corners while the King could not locate his breaking stuff, and treated the game as extended Spring training going for to the curve and slider over and over in an attempt to gain control of those pitches. The A’s hit two doubles off fastball mistakes and that was the difference since Seattle could do nothing with Colon.

The short of it: The last time before Matt Cain tonight that a pitcher came just one base runner away from a perfect game, and that one base runner was a pitcher, was 1986. San Diego’s Jimmy Jones was the hurler, his Houston counterpart Bob Knepper managed to leg a triple off of him.

This Phils didn’t trick Josh Thole; He tricked himself. Rollins put his hand up to indicate that he could go into second standing. Rollins or any other Phillie never spoke to Thole.

It was a bunt up the first base line and Thome fielded it close to the plate and tagged out the batter. When Thole didn’t see the ball lobbed to first, HE thought it went foul and started jogging back to first.

Surprised there wasn’t an article about how the Phil’s tricked Josh Thole into think a bunt went foul and got him to meander back to first base and get tagged out.
