Bell’s ineffectiveness isn’t related to his leaving PetCo, or even losing a couple miles off his fastball. The problem is his curveball went from being a plus pitch to being extremely hittable. This has been going on for a couple years now and the Marlins should have known better.

This guy is not half as good as Petco Park made him out to be. He will lose his closing job by July.

Madson is out for the year.

Lidge has already blown a save.

And Papelbon? Who everyone said was way overpaid? Despite one of the best closer pedigree’s in the game? Despite an incredible run of staying healthy?

Wel Pap’s doing just fine.

Consistency in a closer is a rare commodity. Like all rare commodities, if you want it, you pay for it.

It is one of the great imbecilities of Macondo Banana Massacre Filed that, having been planted in the middle of an urban neighborhood, it doesn't have any parking lots. What is has is a couple of parking garages that contain less than one-sixth the number of parking spaces as the stadium has seats. The rest of the fans have to pay private property owners to park on their lawns or pay exorbitant fees to local businesses to park in their local lots. Do your homework before you come on here talking `opala next time, okay?

A few years ago, one Kevin Marschall Gregg, erstwhile closer, and a couple of his fellow arsonists coughed up enough late inning leads to make the difference between the postseason and the Feeshing season. If you don’t think the closer is important, try and calculate the Borg’s record with Kevin Gregg instead of Mariano Rivera. Some physicists go mad looking at their own calculations, and you would likely join them before running out of fingers.

Yeah, it’s tough to blame a guy who comes out trying too hard to begin with when his infield and, especially, his outfield blows up behind him. That contract is wrapped around his neck like an explosive collar and he’s overthrowing – pitching with his balls instead of his head. His location has been terrible. But the fielding last night? Three ridiculous errors, and you almost have to wonder if Scrooge McLoria took a payoff to plug the new Three Stooges movie. Brett Hayes, Emilio Bonifacio and, of course, Tweeter, turned in better performances as Larry, Moe and Curly than they did as ballplayers. One of those errors was catcher interference – smack, poke – Brett Hayes got his glove tangled up in Jordan Schaefer’s glove. Inexcusable ineptitude. John Buck, Mendoza Line offense and all, wouldn’t have made a stupid mistake like that.

But the outfield? First the normally reliable Emilio Bonifacio drops a fly ball. Wooowooowooowooo. Slap! Then Tweeter, displaying that unique formlessness that makes him such an atrocious outfielder – imagine having Johnny Damon’s throwing arm for a head – executes an uncharacteristically direct route to the descending ball, having plotted its gravity’s rainbow correctly for a change, then runs a little too far past its arc and falls on his ass trying to catch it. Poke, whap! Nyuknyuknyuknyuk.

And as if to drive home the point that this beautiful subtropical evening was just a feint for an evening of unremitting piscine slapstick, some idiot set the fireworks off while Bell was walking off the mound and the game wasn’t over yet – possibly to drown out the boos. The rest of them went off just after the Feesh became official bycatch for the evening and sank three games below the strange attractor, which at the moment doubles as the hatchcover for the NL East basement. The Feesh need to take a hard squint at their events coordinator as well as their closer – what kind of moron celebrates a home loss with fireworks, anyway?

Still no Feesh dingers at home, and the Macondo Harold, our local feeshwrapper, is already running rumors of unattributed harrumphing and whiffling in the tolgeywood of the locker room about the fences being too far out.

Maybe some day, teams will realize that you don’t need to give big money to a “proven closer.” It’s not so much that effective relievers aren’t valuable, they are. It’s just that one, they are less valuable than pretty much every one else on your roster except bench players, and two, they are easier to find than many teams think. Instead of spending all that money on a closer, use it on improving your every day roster and starting pitching staff.
