Why waste time talking about any past MVPs then? It’s in the past. When Ryan Braun is up for the hall of fame let’s not mention he was an MVP. It’s already happened to clearly it’s not worth talking about.

Hell why even give out MVPs? The seasons over by the time they give them out. We should just get over it.

I thought Vin did do a very good job of explaining after looking at several replays.

A foul ball can roll back fair, and be considered in play, as long as it continues to roll on its own motion (hence why infielders pick up foul balls right away, lest they roll back fair again, and why blowing on a ball is not allowed). The ball clearly hit the bat, but I’d be disoriented too after a fastball buzzed that close to my head. The fault falls on the runners, who should have continued to run out the play. If they run, the only out is the batter, which was the point of the sac bunt anyway.

The home plate did initially have his arms up like a foul ball, but then changed to fair ball when the ball squirted into fair territory. Perhaps that could have been clearer (that may well be the proper signal), but I go back to players not being the umpire, continue until clearly told to stop and return.

It’s a teachable moment for all: continue running the play until the ref, umpire, whistle, whatever forces you to stop.

I read on another blog, not sure it’s accurate or not, that a ball’s not foul till the ump vocally calls it foul (his arm movements don’t matter), which Dale Scott never did. It also looks, in retrospect, like the flapping arms could’ve been simply to keep his balance as hitter, catcher, and umpire all bailed away from the plate.

But let’s be honest, I’m a Dodger fan, and everything I just said is bullshit after-the-fact rationalization. I was as confused as anybody, and would’ve been perfectly fine with the call going the other way.

Last years MVP doesn’t mean crap anymore whether it was a guy from a team I cheer for or anyone else. It already happened, why waste time still complaining about it?

I don’t know what you were watching, but the pitch was high and inside, nowhere near the umpire. He screwed up. He lifted both his arms signaling a foul ball (the ball did appear to be fair). That’s what the baserunners saw. Why would they run?

The umpires may not have felt they had sufficient grounds to overturn the call, but unless they’re blind, they surely agreed that the home-plate ump’s body language was, at a minimum, deeply confusing. I have no particular bias in this match-up, but I watched the replay enough times to know that the players must all have been wondering what the hell was going on. The difference was that the Dodgers were smart enough to keep playing and the Padres weren’t, so, you know, good for them—but let’s not pretend this was some sort of slick fielding gem, okay?

Too bad Kemp won’t get to play against the Padres again until May, but Kemp aside.. The Padres remind me of the Bad News Bears minus a happy ending and that triple play signifies their season so far. Btw didn’t the umpire lift his arms indicating foul at first? Might make sense why no one was running…
