So - When Tommy manages to look at itself in the mirror, it becomes self-aware, and its Ego forms at that time, via objectification? I am outside my comfort zone a bit, psychology and philosophy not being my strong suits, but given Lacan's connection to Salvador Dali, I am happy that I managed a Dali reference just this morning. Even though it was an idea meant to supplant your "Tommy" moniker...

You are correct about the home umps call prior to the ball passing first or third, but still the ball is not "foul" until it stops moving, doesn't matter where it hits first, unless it happens to graze the bat, batter, catcher or ump. So much like when a runner slides home and misses the plate, the ump should not make any call until the runner actually enters the dugout or is tagged out or beats the tag and touches home plate.

Hard to know who has a better "angle" on batted balls as they approach first and third base bags. Ideally the home up probably does, if he gets his fat ass in line with the baselines rather than lollygag behind the catcher's box. But on some smashes that could be tough.

One simple remedy to the rapidly diminishing quality of umpiring would be to make transparent the league's grading of the men in blue. With enough demerits, institute a probationary period, followed by a demotion to AAA, eventually down to Little League if necessary.

The power of the Umpire's Union is always suggested as a hindrance to the above policy, but if player's perform poorly, they can be demoted, released or suspended and their Union is just as powerful.

Sometimes when you are given a gift you turn up your nose with disdain. Yesterday the Redlegs were given a gift by 1st base umpire Everitt when he called Rolen safe in the first inning. Clearly out by at least a step, according to replay, Everitt was confused by LaRoche's collision avoidance maneuver. This was the 3rd out. This gift was gratefully accepted when an ensuing walk, followed by a grand slam, put the Redlegs out in front 4-0. The Gnats eventually tied the score but lost in the 11th.
.
No replay, no recourse.

Not exactly Jimbo. The ump had no business raising his hands indicating a foul ball. He shouldn't make any signal at all until someone touches the ball or it stops rolling. This is what lead to all the confusion.

MLB needs to address home plate ump duties. They have plenty to do calling ball and strikes, and plays at the plate, all the rest is better decided by the other 3 umps, things like HBP, fair or foul balls around home, and especially checked swings.

When the ball initially landed in foul territory, umpire Scott properly called it foul, this is usually when the fielder would "knock it foul" and end the play. However, the ball rolled - without being touched - into fair territory, at which point catcher Ellis picked up the live ball and started the around the horn triple play. When Ellis picked up the ball in fair territory Scott then properly called it fair.
.
Was it "fitting and fair" to the Padres?
Probably not, but who said life was fair.
.
Was it properly done according to rule?
Definitely.

When Ellis picked up the ball in fair territory Scott then properly called it fair.
.
Was it “fitting and fair” to the Padres?
Probably not, but who said life was fair.
.
Was it properly done according to rule?
Definitely.

Gator, I do believe you are developing a soft spot for Tommy!
It's kinda sweet, actually.
Unless you are still busy careening back and forth through Kubler-Ross' 5 stages, and you happened to be at "acceptance" when you posted?...

What Craig didn't tell you about the A's /Mariners game:

- Brendan Ryan's homerun came on an 86 mph "fastball" from # 3 starter "My Man" Godfrey.

- Godfrey allowed Smoak's HR on an 83 mph "changeup". Note 3 mph velocity difference between so-called fastball and so-called changeup. Note # 3 starter designation.

- Ichiro smashed a ball off Fuentes and was thrown out by a full step. Pennington smashed a ball off League and was thrown out by inches. Ichiro has visibly lost a step, and this will hurt him on infield hits. Stats from last year back this up.

- Seattle 5-2 against the A's to start the year. A's now travel to SoCal to face the so far tepid Angels. Why do I think the Angels will get well during this series?

Yeah, he clubbed a couple on Saturday, atrocious game that it was, that went nowhere but you can see him finding his range.

One thing about Tommy - the existing videos of the monstrosity in action look exactly like he always will whenever he gets set off, so on those odd days when you feel a jones to behold it in action you have plenty of options already. I doubt if even the cameramen at the Feesh home games are going to bother swiveling for a look once the spectacle becomes jejune with time. I am curious, though, about exactly who it is that's charged with the awesome responsibility of pushing the button and setting him off when a Feesh batter dings. Might make a good subject for an unauthorized autobiography.

You certainly didn't get a thumbs down from me. Last year watching him in Spring Training I knew it was only a matter of time before he was succeeding in the Majors. I pointed out to my girl friend who joined me for a game, that he carried himself like he belonged, and that he was destined to make the parent club. I was a year off in my prediction, but he is raking now. I just do not know how we are going to get him enough plate appearances, but I like the Cards chances vs the AL in their parks during inter league play. Just imagine the Cards line-up with Craig at 2B, and Carpenter in the DL.

Jesus, my fingers cringe even typing the letters DL. A palsy sets in and I get the yips as if I will be tasered by my keyboard for producing such a foul assemblage of letters.
