Yesterday Bob Nightengale of USA Today said that the Astros were shopping closer Brett Myers. Today Astros GM Jeff Lunhow says nopers:
Astros GM Jeff Luhnow told FOX 26 Sports there’s nothing to a report in USA Today that closer Brett Myers is on the trading block.

Seems rather early for people to be shopping closers. Don’t you wait until someone is desperate? And no, I don’t count the Giants as desperate yet given that they have viable in-house options to replace Brian Wilson.

Hey the Astros are 4-5 and in second place in the NL Central. Shopping their closer now would discourage the few hopeful Houston fans left. Throw the management a bone. They need to be allowed to revel in whatever glory they can conjure up. It isn’t going to last, and Meyers will be out there soon enough.

Speaking as an Astro fan, I would not go so far as to say we have great hopes. But Myers can eat some innings, and most of the younger pitchers are unproven for a lot of innings. I am not sure they need to pitcch his innings-eating potential until they get a little further down the road.

He can eat the innings, but are they quality innings? He’ll also “take the ball every 5th day” but that likely won’t be much better. Myers was a decent pitcher for stretches for the Phillies when he still had a fastball. He then lost about 30 lbs on a “diet” a few years back and his fastball was in the high 80′s and his career of mediocre at best pitching began. Anyone relying on him to close for a winning team would be crazy.

Given team expectations, a live arm will do. Two years ago he put in a lot of quality innnings. Can he do it now? I don’t know. But they could easily be putting up a lot of minor league arms very quickly and bringing kids along too fast.

Aww, Berman didn’t actually say “nopers.” Way to tease, Shyster!
