Another day, another center fielder down for the Cardinals

Jon Jay made an early exit yesterday after crashing into the center field fence and suffering a sprained right shoulder. Tonight it was Skip Schumaker‘s turn.

Schumaker, who was just activated from the disabled list this afternoon and started in place of Jay, ran into the outfield wall after attempting to make a leaping catch on a fly ball off the bat of Pirates’ outfielder Alex Presley in the top of the first inning. He met with a team trainer and manager Mike Matheny before being replaced by Eric Komatsu.

The good news is that it doesn’t appear to be anything serious. Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports that Schumaker merely had the wind knocked out of him and that it was Matheny’s decision for him to leave the game. There’s a good chance he’ll be available this weekend.

Schumaker began the season on the disabled list after tearing his right oblique muscle during spring training. He wasn’t expected to return from his rehab assignment this quickly, but the Cardinals were forced to speed up his timetable following the injuries to Jay and Lance Berkman.

These nagging injuries at the start of the year are a bit worrisome…Evidence of TLR philosophy, though, is already beginning to emerge..Matheny had to have taken notes..Have everybody ready to play. Not just the 25 on the roster, but evryone in the organization. My big concern is Yadi… stay healthy dude, as you go – so go the Birds on the Bat.

Lance berkman being hurt does suck but matt carpenter isnt too bad he will fill in nicely until puma returns. I think we are better off with lance lynn then we are chris carpenter. Shane Robinson is quick and can play center field with no problem the dude can fly on the base pads. while the vets are down its time for the future to show us what they have..I like it

No problem here, the Cards have Center Fielders to burn. Robinson, Kamatsu, even Beltran, with Adron Chambers in AAA, just in case. Actually, neither Jay nor Schumaker appear to be out for more than a couple of days.

Somewhere Tony Rasmus sits with an “insert Cards centerfielder here” voodoo doll.
