As expected the Rays have activated B.J. Upton from the disabled list and the center fielder will make his season debut tonight after sitting out the first 13 games with a back injury.

Upton, who suffered the injury in a March 14 collision with Desmond Jennings, went just 3-for-21 (.143) during a seven game minor-league rehab assignment.

Jennings has filled in for Upton as the everyday center fielder, but now he’ll shift back to left field and Matt Joyce will move to right field with Ben Zobrist likely seeing more time as a second baseman.

Stephen Vogt, a 27-year-old career minor leaguer who went 0-for-13 in his first taste of the majors, was optioned back to the minors to make room for Upton.

Upton is the epitome of why statisticians write blogs, and baseball minds coach teams. He is the most under rated player in all of baseball. He isn’t Matt Kemp, but he’s Andre Ethier with Matt Kemp’s speed, and better than Matt Kemp’s defense. If he could ever learn to bunt, he’d be a favorite to win the MVP. Good luck Rays. Beat them Sox and Yanks 4 of 5 years, but hold steady in the playoffs when my Tigers come calling..

Its time for BJ to show what he’s got or he’ll end up being another Austin Jackson. Overlooked in free agency until someone take a cheap flyer on him. Maybe the Red Sox should take a run at him. Tampa has an abundance of young talent in their farm system and its obvious they’re not going to re-sign him.
