Rich Thompson designated for assignment by A’s

Apr 25, 2012, 1:18 PM EDT

UPDATE: That was quick. Less than a week after claiming him off waivers the A’s designated Thompson for assignment, putting him back on the waiver wire following one appearance.

Designated for assignment by the Angels last week, Rich Thompson will stay in the AL West after being claimed off waivers by the A’s.

Thompson went from late-inning bullpen role to the waiver wire thanks to an ugly outing against the Twins on April 12, but prior to that the 27-year-old right-hander had a 2.57 ERA and 71/24 K/BB ratio in 74 innings for the Angels during the past two seasons.

He also has a solid Triple-A track record, so if nothing else Thompson is capable of being a useful middle reliever in Oakland.

Wait a minute! He has ungodly movement on his fastball. I was just thinking they should throw him more. He reminded me of a young Scott Shields. What is Scioscia…I mean…DiPoto doing? They need solid bullpen arms.

Thompson has better than average stuff, but it often deserted him in pressure situations, most notably in his final appearance with the Angels when he coughed up a one run lead in the 8th…….the Angels might have been able to carry him a little further, but with old-timers like Hawkins, Isringhausen and Takahashi littering the bullpen, they had to find more reliable arms…..It’s always scary when the Angels cut loose a reliever, though; a lot of them (Jenks,Turnbull, Peralta etc.) seem to find at least temporary success elsewhere…….
