I loved Bell when he was on the Padres, but he was slowly declining and I was surprised the Marlins gave him the deal he got. He will probably battle back as he usually does, but I think closers are overrated with the money they get.

Well, at least Ruben Amaro got one FA move right this winter. Signing Papelpon over Heath Bell. The argument has been that signing Papelbon left no other monies for offense. Who knows, its still early.

Showtime has a new series called ‘The Franchise’. It’s like ‘Hard Knocks’ only MLB. The team this year is the Marlins. On the preview, Ozzie is holding a team meeting. Lauria is holding a clicker, checking everytime Ozzie says ‘fuck’ in various ways. By the time the speech was over, Lauria clicked 91 times. Awesome.

His trillion-dollar leadoff hitter has a.263 OBP and can see his reflection on the turbid surface of Rio Mendoza, kinda like a clueless Narcissus who is seriously contemplating diving in. His expensive commyooneest manager is an affront to the freedom-loving people of Macondo and can't open his mouth without something vulgar or stupid, even for heem, coming out of it. His lineup can't get a ball out of the infield unless it's got a laser targeting system homed in on the pocket of an outfielder's glove. His best hitter is a former utility infielder. His top slugger hasn't put a ball in the seats yet this season. His sole comfort in life right now is how badly Albert Pujols is doing. Meanwhile, the strange attractor continues, implacably, to recede in the firmament. The Spirit of Nutsedge hovers over every incipient crack in the sidewalk and spraypainted graffiti all over his brand new stadium is only waiting for one or two streetlamps to burn out. No doubt he is thinking of that distant afternoon when his grandfather took him to discover sno-cones. Whatever lets him escape.

Once again, the Rangers come out looking good in a deal. Everyone, including Bell, thought they were going after Heath Bell at the deadline last year, but Jon Daniels got Mike Adams instead, who’s been a solid setup man.

Justin Turner’s 14-pitch AB where he started off in an 0-2 hole and worked a walk was one of those things that you love as a baseball fan, and non-baseball fans hate.

The buildup of dramatic tension reminds me of that scene from Sports Night where Jeremy is editing the baseball highlights

Casey: Okay, this section here where the batter taps dirt off his shoe and spits four times…
