He has the smarts to be a decent hitting coach, he’s just the last to realize his playing days are over…. Minus a fluke injury in the AL or delmon young going to some “tolerance related rehab”

I suppose he could play some LF in Fenway, but even that might be a stretch at this point. 1B/DH is already covered in Boston. They’ve got Byrd/Ross/Sweeney now and they’re holding their own and can all–at least moderately–play the field. Tough to see where Abreu fits especially once Crawford and Ellsbury get back.

Abreu is horrible. He’s 38. This is what 38 yr old ball players generally look like. His power is gone and his on-base skills are fading as pitchers realize he won’t do anything with a pitch you groove anyway.

It’s like talking yourself into thinking Ibanez is a decent option at DH because of his RBI and ignoring his sub-.300 OBP…..anyone hitting in Ibanez’s place in the order would have a lot of RBI because the Yankees in front of him are on base all day long.

Point of order: 1) Amaro wasn’t the GM 6 years ago. 2) The Phillies traded him to the Yankees, he wasn’t non-tendered.

Actually, I’ve been told (by a person who knows him, not a scribe who judges players by the quotes they give) that he’s a really nice, down to earth guy. He’s probably more upset about his fading career than anyone.

If I am not reading too much into this comment, I assume you are saying that Abreu was so upset at what he thought was an outright lie (the 400 ABs comment) that he dedicated himself to become a distraction and to poor performance so he would get released and therefore guarantee that he did not reach the mark.

If I read this right, Abreu has 5 RBI in 8 games. If he plays 160 games, that’s a 100 RBI season. I guess, since he is only batting .208, he knows when to hit. Maybe he’s over the hill, or maybe he just needs a chance at one more season.

Abreu is going to make someone happy. He’ll turn it around. Players often do after leaving a team where they felt disrespected, which may have had an effect on his performance this year. He’s leaving, with a chip on his shoulder. Good luck BA.
