With all due respect to the parties involved, here's what happened in the Yanks-Tigers game:
It was 42 degrees at game time and not getting any warmer. Neither Verlander nor SuperNova had their best stuff and yada-yada-yada we go into the 9th tied.
Selfless as always, Mo goes 1-2-3 then Valverde in typical fashion, demurs because it was a non-close situation so Leyland sends in a decapitated MudHen who proceeds to throw the ball in the general direction of River Ave.Our Super Star Sharp Shooter Short Stop proceeds to third and start daydreaming of the night's conquest when another ball was errantly hurled at ARod, who, after many pleas, finally convinces our SSSSS to score the winning run with no hits having been achieved in the inning.
No pies were hurt during the filming of this spectacular win, mainly because Beep-beep prefers ice cream and it was too cold for that.

Don't look now, the A's are over .500. How are they doing it? Weak schedule and once again, starting pitching. Oakland is now 3rd in the MLB in team pitching ERA at 2.68, led by Tommy Milone at 2.00.

Things are due for a change, however. After this weekend against the Showalters, the face Boston, Tampa, Toronto and Detroit in the next 12. It could get ugly.

In dropping their sixth straight, this time to the Snakes, the Feesh seem intent on commemorating last year's midseason collapse. Their current losing streak mirrors in most respects the epic ten game losing streak that sent them splattering into the divisional septic tank where they whiled away the remainder of the season like Abbot and Costello at the bottom of their well - and all this before the month of April is even over.

This year, they're proving that the injuries to the pitching staff they blamed for last year's implosion weren't as key as their spinners made it sound. They're doing it with the same wretched situational hitting that left them 28th in the majors in RISP (.149), except that this season they're not even getting on base enough to strand many runners in the first place. They're collectively batting - yes - .149 over their current six-game skid that has left the strange attractor glimmering in the distant sky with not much more panache than Venus in the morning. After an unaccustomed offseason splurge that saw them bring in a high-priced starting pitcher whose solid efforts they are consistently wasting, a high-priced reliever who has proven about as reliable as the irreproducible results of cold fusion experiments, and a high-priced leadoff hitter with a subatomic OBP and a marked affection for dogpaddling in Rio Mendoza, not to mention an irremediable moron of a manager who opened the year by insulting the core fan base they moved to their garish new palace in Little Havana to ingratiate in the first place, an offseason in which they utterly failed to address their godawful run production problems, the Feesh find themselves still the division doormat they were at the end of last season.

Their overall play, with the exception of their starting rotation and the play of Omar Infante, who has been wriggling so mightily that he seems to be trying to do the job of that single magic sperm, has been a study in bonelessness. It's a little surprising that some of the other teams in the division aren't visibly embarrassed about wiping their cleats with this team. I'm an animal rights activist and I'd be less self-conscious about kicking the neighbor's beagle puppy when he wasn't looking.
