Albert Pujols is not happy with Angels hitting coach Mickey Hatcher
May 1, 2012, 8:22 AM EDT
Someone seems a bit surly.
Before last night’s Angels-Twins game, the Angels hitters and hitting coach Mickey Hatcher had their usual pre-series meeting. During the meeting Albert Pujols stood up and said some inspiring words of some kind about how he’s going to turn it around and go team and all of that.
That’s cool. Good to see the big man keep his confidence up. Angels hitting coach Mickey Hatcher thought it was good too, and he told the media about it after the game. Then someone asked Albert about it. Scott Miller of CBS Sports.com tells us, however, that Pujols wasn’t too happy:
“Mickey should have never told you guys that,” Pujols said. “That stuff needs to be private. He should have never told the media. What we talked about at the meeting, not disrespecting Mickey, but that stuff should stay behind closed doors.”
Pujols said he intends to speak with Hatcher about the matter.
Jeez, lighten up, Frances.
In other news: Emo Albert.

As I said in the homerless Albert thread, maybe Mickey doesn’t give him the same, you know, stuff that McGwire did, altho you would think PED’s would be easy to get in CA.

Plmathfoto:
You obviously aren’t aware that McGwire has been the hitting coach for ALL OF TWO YEARS.
Additonally, you must NOT be aware of A.P having his worse season (statistically) of his entire career last year. Take a look at A.P.’s number PRIOR to BigMac arriving in the Lou.’
Yeah…he is a fairly decent player.

And you must not be aware that who’s been with McGwire from the beginning…LaRussa who has a lawyer background and never noticed Canseco & McGwire et al using anything illegal, maybe I have the wrong hookup you may be right

Cool…So in your opinion, playing under LaRussa is sufficient proof of steroid use?If so, then here is the PLMATHFOTO approved list of steroid users in baseball:

That’s just it. They didn’t do anything illegal. MLB turned their collective heads. You can’t pin this on TLR anymore than any other Manager. Again…MLB turned THEIR heads as the balls were flying out of the parks at record pace. All in the interest of moving the turnstiles.

Baseball reminds of the old times when fights were fixed and anything goes. What these players, coaches, managers and owners did was worse than illegal, it was immoral, unethical, absolutely destroyed baseball as a legitimate sport, robbed fans of remembering memorable moments and has thrown itself in the toilet.

Oh fer cryin’ out loud. Okay, so you hate PEDs and the unfair advantage it may or may not give a player. I can understand that. But if you’re just going to immediately jump to the conclusion that any really good ballplayer is only good because of the drugs, why the f*** do you even bother being a baseball fan? No, scratch that, why bother being a fan of ANY sports?

Sure. But if he doesn’t like the situation in LAA, he might well displace the blame to someone else. Humans do that sometimes.

Ah, when one finally reads the article, one learns that Pujols’s ire at Hatcher isn’t because he blames the batting coach for his bad start, but merely feels Hatcher shouldn’t have repeated Pujols’s locker-room pep talk to outsiders.
The REAL story here, then, isn’t Pujols, Hatcher or the Angels, but sloppy writing by Hardball Talk, which crafted this utterly misleading headline.
-
- fearlessleader - May 1, 2012 at 1:19 PM
-
It’s not misleading if you have any prior knowledge of Pujols. He’s not exactly known for listening to coaches’ advice.
-
- spudchukar - May 1, 2012 at 2:10 PM

I have some doubts as to the veracity of the statement that he isn’t known for listening to coaches. If it is true, this is the greatest condemnation of coaching in the history of sports.

ALBERT.. SHUT UP AND HIT THE BALL. YOU DID BEFORE YOU EVER GOT TO LA.. YOU GOT THIS FAR WITHOUT EVER MEETING MICKEY HATCHER.SO WHAT DID MICKEY HATCHER SAY OR DO THAT MAKES YOU A HUNKAJUNK NOW? PLEASE.
THIS IS SO TYPICAL OF THE MENTALITY OF MLB PLAYERS. THEY’RE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR SOME KIND OF EXCUSE TO STEER THE FOCUS AWAY FROM THE TRUE PROBLEM. WHO CARES WHAT THE BATTING COACH SEZ TO THE MEDIA? HOW DOES THAT INFLUENCE ANYTHING ALBERT DOES? ALBERT.. PUT YOUR HEAD DOWN.. AND FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU’RE DOING WRONG. THE REST WILL TAKE CARE OF ITSELF.

My take is Pujols was complaining about publicizing his private comments, not the hitting instruction he’s getting from Hatcher.
