I honestly don’t have a problem with this. It’s his job to win games, not make old fogies happy about speeding up the game, or manning-up or whatever. He had a one run lead to protect with mediocre arms, and gave himself the best odds he could. Kudos to him.

If I was Mills, I would have probably left even a tiring starter out there to face Nieuwenhuis too because his alternative arms haven’t been good to him lately. Lopez failed him sunday, as did Carpenter. Wesley Wright has walked lefties on three occasions already this season as the only batter he’s faced in a game, so Mills couldn’t risk bringing him out there with the bases loaded. And would anyone wanted to have seen Abad at all, and especially not with the bases full of Mets? I didn’t think so. The man who may have blown his bully last night was Collins, who left Acosta out there too long. However, I don’t know what other alternatives Collins had at the time.

no way! An article that mentions the Cards or Cards-related personnel (Tony LaRussa) in a negative light and @stlouis1baseball hasn’t come to their rescue and belittled the writer???

Selig and the League all moan about increasing Replay as ‘it will slow the game down too much’ – yet we’re all OK with this 6 pitchers for 6 batters nonsense? I get points for Holds on my Fantasy team, so in one respect it’s cool with me, but it’s out of control. I’m not for regulation of the game, but it would make sense to limit this over-LaRussa-ing of a Bullpen, as well as adding a 6th umpire in a booth who reviews replays in-game on HDTV for the sake of getting calls RIGHT more frequently.

I said this on another thread, but he caught a fair amount of bad press for how he managed the bullpen against the Reds on Sunday. This kind of looks like an over reaction to that criticism.

Bullpen management was atrocious on both sides. Mills UNDERmanaged the bullpen before he overmanaged it. If he had gone to the lefty to face Nieuwenhuis in the first place, the game might not have been tied. Then Collins left Acosta out there too long. You got one rare good inning out of him, get him out of there!

To his credit, the bullpen isn’t very good. Any advantage he thinks he has with different guys, he’s gotta take it.
