Except in the article they correctly state he pitched for the Cards in 2010…not 6 seasons ago. Brewers dumped him, Cards took a chance on him and he finished 2010 with a 3-6 record for them.

The Padres pitching depth depleted when Stauffer and Mosely went on the DL and then Casey Kelly who was due to get some MLB time.

They already have two pitchers on the DL who were in or supposed to be in the opening day rotation. And Casey Kelly who probably would have been the next call-up is also injured. So no, they didn’t go into the season with 4 pitchers more deserving than Suppan.

This just means that the kids aren’t yet ready for showtime. Nothing wrong with that; let them develop at their own pace. Think of Suppan as an innings-eater: he is pitching so more valuable arms don’t have to.

Can it get any worse for the Padres? Even though they stink this year at least they had a chance when Luebke’s spot in the rotation came up.
