1. Middlebrooks is dealing with a minor thumb injury. If he’s going to be coming up to play, might as well have it be when he’s healthiest.
2. I doubt Middlebrooks will come up until September or until he is going to be anointed the third baseman. Why have one of your best prospects come up and possibly sit or have his confidence crushed because you decided to rush him?
3. Middlebrooks is looking like a monster now. Of course it is May 1st. Maybe we should let him get to 100 ABs?
4. Iglesias is likely only in town for a day or two until Cook is activated. Maybe if Youk goes on the DL…but not for a cup of coffee.

I have a major problem with this.

If this was Bobby’s call, then he’s one of two things: losing his mind or to chickenshit of hurting Youkilis’ feelings to call up Middlebrooks.

Jose Iglesias is a major league baseball . . . on the field. He’s truly great in that department. However, he CANNOT hit. He hasn’t even shown he can bunt adequately to the best of my knowledge.

Meanwhile, Will Middlebrooks has clearly developed into the total package. The knock on him last season was that while he was a Major League caliber defender at 3B, he still had a hole or two in his swing that needed addressing. Now the scouts are raving about his approach at the plate, he’s arguably the best hitting prospect in all of baseball through the first month of the season . . . and IGLESIAS gets the call?

Man-o-man . . . like Cinderella so deftly swooned . . . “Don’t know what ya got til it’s gawwwwwwn”. You might take small issue here and there with Francona/Epstein personnel moves, but they were always defensible. This one is not.
