Baseball America‘s international prospect guru Ben Badler reports that the Yankees have signed 26-year-old Cuban outfielder Adonis Garcia for $400,000.
Garcia has consistently posted huge batting averages in Cuba, but Badler notes that his raw tools aren’t considered particularly impressive and he stands just 5-foot-7 “so it’s hard for scouts to see him fitting in as a big league regular.”
Of course, considering that a $400,000 investment is basically the same as a third-round draft pick’s signing bonus it’s a pretty low-risk pickup for the Yankees and Badler also notes that Garcia’s “bat is advanced enough that he figures to reach Double-A or Triple-A quickly.”
If nothing else, adding “Adonis Garcia” to the farm system really boosts the organization’s collection of names.

Every generation or so Yankees get a Cuban player who really pays off. Pedro Ramos back in the 1960s, El Duque Hernandez in the 90s and 2000s. Maybe this guy turns out to be a sleeper. At $400G it is worth a look.
Then again Jose Contreras didn’t work out so great so who knows

Adonis Garcia sounds more like A-Rod’s porn name than a baseball player from Cuba.
