Well stated Xavier. I am a proud Yankee “disliker” from way back.
But it is impossible for me to NOT like Mariano.
The Guy was still productive as hell as a 42 year old.
Personally, I am hoping he heals completely and goes out on his own terms.
End of next year…2014…2015 whevever it is.

Why would the Yankees trade for Hanrahan? They have arguably the best reliever in baseball (Robertson), an established closer (Soriano), a pretty solid third guy (Wade), and a guy they’ll move to the bullpen once his rotation replacement is ready (Hughes). I can’t see the Yanks trading somebody like Campos or Bichette for forty innings of a marginal upgrade.

The Yanks will give them reasons to deal him with young prospects and in Pittsburgh it’s already widely accepted that he’s as good as gone. I didn’t say, or imply, that they are going to get him tomorrow. They will surely try out Robertson and/or Soriano and when that doesn’t work out, they will come calling. The fact is, the Bucco’s asking price just went up and if another top closer goes down, it’ll go up again. I’m sure something centered around Campos or Bichette, Jr would get the job done.

The fact of the matter is that Hanrahan is going to be dealt and the Bronx just became the most logical spot.

Lifelong Sox fan here. This is never the way I wanted to see Mo’s career end. Classiest man in the game-a classic warrior in the best sense. Given the current state of the closer role, he is truly an historic figure. He also has elevated a single pitch, the cutter, to arguably the most important in a modern pitcher’s arsenal.
For as much heartache as he has caused me over the years, the game will be less compelling with him gone.
Next stop Cooperstown. All the best, #42, you’ll be remembered by all true fans as one of the all-time greats.

I was thinking the very same thing. And Munson. And Adenhart. And on and on. Though one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen actually on the diamond was in the 1973 Series when Willie Mays caught a fly ball but had to toss the ball to a teammate for the throw back to the infield. Tears. One of the Truly Greats was clearly done. This is kind of like that.

Tell that to Jamie Moyer. Just kidding. I’ve never enjoyed seeing a pitcher put down my team more than watching Mariano throw the same pitch 3 times to each batter, but each pitch coming in one mph faster. Edgar Martinez hit him well, but not any of the other Mariners.

Yankees can dial all they want, Pirates have no reason to deal one of the elite closers in MLB. The club has been competitive after 25 games, so a trade doesn’t make any sense. If the Bucs collapse in June and July, then a trade is a possibility, and the return will be greater closer to the trading deadline.
