Ryan Howard takes batting practice

May 8, 2012, 9:40 AM EDT

Ryan Howard took batting practice yesterday, the first time he’s done so since being cleared for baseball activities at the end of April.  Ruben Amaro was pleased, calling it “progress.”

The next step will be a minor league rehab assignment, though there’s no timetable for that.  The thinking is still that he’ll return to the bigs in June. Though it is worth noting, nothing has been on schedule in his rehab so far.

Looking forward to having the Big Dog back in the lineup.

  2. digitaldonnie - May 8, 2012 at 9:50 AM

Over hyped, over paid, over cheered. Doesn’t matter one bit. No more PED’S for this guy, no more power. Keep him in Triple A.

    • cur68 - May 8, 2012 at 9:54 AM

Easy Philly Phans: this is merely trolling. Bad trolling at that. This guy just just wants a long list of comments after his name. Ignore the poor buffoon and he’ll go away.

    • phillyphreak - May 8, 2012 at 9:55 AM

Clap..clap..clap. Congratulations on making no sense.

    • paperlions - May 8, 2012 at 11:34 AM

      “over cheered”?

Wow. That’s a new one. How can you root too much for your team’s players?

      • cleverbob - May 8, 2012 at 11:38 AM

It’s a nice change of pace from what Philly fans are normally accused of…

    • stlouis1baseball - May 8, 2012 at 12:19 PM

      Don’t be a chump…CHUMP.

  3. ajcardsfan - May 8, 2012 at 10:05 AM

I hope to see Howard back in the line-up soon! He’s one of the big names from Lafayette HS [I'll assume you all know the other one I'm specifically thinking of], so it’s always nice seeing a former local doing good.

I tore both my Achilles Tendons (not at the same time, but 2 years apart) and there are ALWAYS set-backs. It’s just a terrible injury. I was just trying to get back to run and play slow pitch softball so I can only imagine the rehap involved to play professional baseball. It’s a long process and though I’m not a huge fan of Ryan Howard, he’s part of the “club”. I’ll root for him to be successful when he returns.

    • The Baseball Gods - May 8, 2012 at 10:17 AM

Professional athletes are a completely different breed than yourself. They are getting some of the best care in the world. I would say it is much more likely for a normal everyday person to have a setback with an Achilles injury than a professional athlete. Not to say that it won’t happen, but it’s definitely less likely.

  5. heyblueyoustink - May 8, 2012 at 10:14 AM

How did you come across this information? Seems to me in the picture provided he’s been incognito……along with the rest of the Phils offense.

  6. Jonny 5 - May 8, 2012 at 10:28 AM

The Phillies need this man back in the line up. Without a doubt.

  7. digitaldonnie - May 8, 2012 at 10:58 AM

Not trolling. Speaking truths. Ryan Howards head is as big as Bonds. Usually after these guys quit taking PED’S they get hurt over and over. Such is Ryan Howard.

    • Kevin S. - May 8, 2012 at 11:07 AM

Riiiiight. Truth. Wouldn’t have anything to do with debuting late, getting right into his physical prime, and then declining early the way many large, low-contact sluggers are prone to do, would it? Nah, we’re going to play guessing games about head sizes. Oh, and by the way, Howard’s effing huge. Of course he’s going to have a big head.

    • Utley's Hair - May 8, 2012 at 11:25 AM

Pedro Gomez never denied being called digitaldonnie.

    • Joe - May 8, 2012 at 3:33 PM

If we’re going to use the “big head” standard to determine roid users, Polanco must be juicing bigtime. And Juan Pierre must not be at all.

  8. digitaldonnie - May 8, 2012 at 11:21 AM

Howard is a roid freak. A grown man doesn’t add almost 50 lbs. of muscle at the age of 27 in a 6 month span. Why do u think he can’t get healthy now? No PED’S to speed up the process. They should change his nickname from the big piece to the big cheat. Change his jersey number to IGF1.

    • The Baseball Gods - May 8, 2012 at 11:25 AM

      Troll

    • Utley's Hair - May 8, 2012 at 11:27 AM

So, you just troll to levy unsubstantiated allegations against people? Nice. I hope it doesn’t catch on that you’re a crack addicted moron. Proof? Well, none, but it’s gotta be true.

    • Kevin S. - May 8, 2012 at 11:31 AM

Yeah, Howard added fifty pounds of muscle in six months. Right. Even with the faster muscle breakdown and regrowth that allow you to work out harder and add more muscle than your previous capacity, you couldn’t lift enough iron to add that much weight in half a year. When your best evidence is crap you made up, it’s a pretty clear sign you’re talking out of your ass.

    • stlouis1baseball - May 8, 2012 at 12:21 PM

      Someone has Ryan Howard envy…

    • CJ - May 8, 2012 at 12:36 PM

I once gained 50 pounds in 6 months and called it muscle. Didn’t even use steroids.

      • Jonny 5 - May 8, 2012 at 12:43 PM

lol CJ….. I just gained 20 lbs of “muscle” too from tearing my MCL and sitting on my a$$ too much.

      • Utley's Hair - May 8, 2012 at 12:51 PM

I once gained about 10 pounds of mussels on vacation down the shore…well, until, you know….

  9. cleverbob - May 8, 2012 at 11:36 AM

I have it on good authority (an unnamed source tied to a baseball blog comment section) that digitaldonnie can’t put down the rock.

  10. badmamainphilliesjamas - May 8, 2012 at 12:04 PM

Sort of makes me long for the days when the trolls just called Howard fat and slow.

  11. digitaldonnie - May 8, 2012 at 12:06 PM

The one thing you’re not Bob is clever. Howard is just a juiced up has been. Yeah he had some productive years. That’s what taking HGH will do for a one tool power hitter. You’ll never see those numbers ever again from him. Better start finding the next poor guy the Phillies can inject with that poison.

    • Utley's Hair - May 8, 2012 at 12:49 PM

Okay, you claim not to be a troll, but that would make you a libelous jacka$$…is that true?

    • cleverbob - May 8, 2012 at 1:03 PM

Well now that you’ve cleared all that up and substantiated your wild accusations with solid proof, I’ll have to change my name. I’m thinking of going with digitalbobbie

      • Utley's Hair - May 8, 2012 at 1:06 PM

Come on, Bob. You know as well as anyone that all you need to substantiate accusations is to repeat them over and over and over. Like Donnie’s issues with crack…or was it PCP…oh, what the hell, both.

      • stlouis1baseball - May 8, 2012 at 2:21 PM

        Hahaha! Digital”boobie.” He said “boobie.”

  12. kevinbnyc - May 8, 2012 at 1:27 PM

Ryan Howard also eats adorable puppies #thingsryanhowarddoesntdo

  13. digitaldonnie - May 8, 2012 at 1:56 PM

Phillies fans are a joke. You resort to saying I smoke crack. Can’t find a better argument than that. You’re also the kind of ppl that when you are in an argument u only get louder and start shouting, as if that makes your useless drivel of a point right. Start calling u the Detroit Phillies. bwwwhahaha.

    • cleverbob - May 8, 2012 at 1:58 PM

Where’s your argument? You posit that he juices, takes HGH, dopes, or whatever but don’t offer any proof or logic. We’re just fighting nonsense with nonsense.

    • Utley's Hair - May 8, 2012 at 2:01 PM

Never said you smoked it…but since you bring it up…. Note that you didn’t deny it.

You claim that we resort to making baseless and unsubstantiated accusations about someone that we don’t know…hmm…where has that happened before…oh, THAT’S right….

    • stlouis1baseball - May 8, 2012 at 2:23 PM

Donnie: A piece of unsolicited advice…
You are NOT doing yourself any favors when you end your post with “bwwwhahaha.”

  14. digitaldonnie - May 8, 2012 at 1:57 PM

Oh and 14-16 makes my team<Phillies.

    • cleverbob - May 8, 2012 at 1:59 PM

      I’m ok with that

    • Utley's Hair - May 8, 2012 at 2:25 PM

Prove it by stating what your team is. Oh, that’s right—you’re not big on proving anything…just making vague baseless statements. Which, of course, makes me think you’re a Twins or Royals fan. Or maybe you aren’t a baseball fan at all.

      • stlouis1baseball - May 8, 2012 at 2:27 PM

Sounds like he is a huge Ryan Howard fan with all that envy spewing from his posts.

      • Utley's Hair - May 8, 2012 at 2:56 PM

A huge Ryan Howard fan? That means digitaldonnie roids up, right?

      • foreverchipper10 - May 9, 2012 at 10:42 AM

Whomever he is a fan of they are WORSE than the Phils according to his statement.

        “my team < Phillies"

      • Utley's Hair - May 9, 2012 at 10:48 AM

Aw hell…brain fart. I guess I got a bit carried away.

    • stlouis1baseball - May 8, 2012 at 2:25 PM

Oh yeah? Well my Dad is tougher than your Dad!
