At some point Mark McGwire deserves a little recognition. Last year the Cards led the NL in slugging and OBP on their way to the championship. This year they are on a quest to better that mark. Holy batshit Robin, they are mashing. When Berkman returns on Friday, the plethora of wealth only increases. I guess Robinson in the odd man out, which is a shame since he has played so well.

Here's hoping the Cards' fans give Furcal a rousing reception at home this weekend. The dude should be recognized for his contributions so far in 2012. He is the team MVP at this point in the season among a handful of candidates.

Who would have thunk the Red Birds would be touting a league leading win total, with Carpenter on the shelf, Wainwright struggling to find his form, Salas and Sanchez offering little, Holliday around the .250 mark, and Berkman with zero HRs?

Is Craig healthy enough for second base? Some kinda line-up if he can handle the role.

Eye candy is one thing. Remember that at some point you have to talk, too. I am content.

I look on the bright side. Austin is more the future of Texas than the signs you see on the side of the road. Four of the five major urban areas lean left at this point. The pendulum will swing back toward the center as the population urbanizes. Probably never more than a swing state, but adding a second argument to the marketplace of ideas will be good for us.

Sartre; celebrity or philosopher? Gopnik had a too brief but interesting article in New Yorker.

Oh yes, baseball. Good luck to the feesh in New York. Both teams playing well, but I thought Miami looked better.

I was a little surprised nobody else commented on the Young Frankenstein reference. One of the all time great movies and Eye-Gor is one of my favorite characters- "Damn those eyes". As a Phillies fan, it's nice to see something that stops me fom wanting to cry and makes me smile, so thank you Craig. I'd like to think that the Phillies can't get any worse and then they prove me wrong; it used to be that i was always sure thaey could come back from any deficit, that has completely reversed and i'm not confident they can win unless it's at least a 7 run lead. Now lets get your heads out of your asses and win a few games.

Sitting at Bergstrom waiting for my slightly delayed flight - no connection required though, thank Buddha. Stopped at Jasmine's tacqueria on the north side of Ben White just off the airport exit for my traditional farewell burgeoning breakfast burritos - it's a little dive with mamacita en la cucina, you know the kind of place. Great coffee too. It'll hold me all the way home.

Incidentally, some of the idiotic campaign signs along the road reminded me that there was, indeed, a so-called Mayan postclassic, when the Toltecs came down from Teotihuacan and occupied Yucatan and imposed an imperialistic regime of bloviated chest-thumping, the progressive concentration of wealth in the hands of the priestly class and their sycophants, and ruinous warfare on Mayan civilization. It led, inevitably, to another round of famine and collapse. Ultimately, the weeds and iguanas took over. You read about it, and it reminds you a lot of the way Bush succeeded Clinton.

I'm loathe to use the thumbs either way since I think they're stupid in the extreme - just a cheap shot way of avoiding conversation and justifying opinions. However, I gave the preceding post a thumbs-up, reluctantly, since its reference to the author of Frankenstein - however oblique, not to mention its incipient gesture towards cousin Percy, even though his poetry always seemed kinda wussy to me (I lean towards "Howl" and "The Idea of Order at Key West" myself) - struck me as a nice neo-classical touch for this blog.

I saw the Red Sox live vs the Royals, aces. They have a butt-load of hitting. Just awesome hitting. What they don't have is pitching. This is not a blow it up and start over type deal, IMO. Just overhaul the bullpen and starting rotation...and get a new manager. That last one most of all.

Nobody's called the Phillies an "up and coming team" this year. Any team that's won its division five years in a row is already pretty much there, don't you think?

Weird that the Mets were down 4-2 and all I could think was "ah, big deal, the Mets will come back." But I was right. And apparently the Mets are leading the league in comeback wins. Part of me wants to have permission to believe in them. The rest of me knows it's way too soon and that division is way too tough. And that they preceded the current winning streak of five with a losing streak of four, in the style of many .500 clubs. But it's still fun for now and I am not going to let a little thing like reality bother just yet.

True...the Twins are in bad shape, but I'm sure they've got more heart.

Also, they didn't enter the season with either the massive payroll or the expectations of the Red Sox, especially after last September's debacle. This was a team arrogantly projected to be a lock for the World Series last year.

That makes them doubly worse in my mind.
