Despite being a Yankee fan (ergo BOSTON SUCKS) I just explained the same thing to my son. Ted Williams would have had far more records than he does. Now imagine him hitting to the short Yankee Stadium porch! Woulda, coulda, shoulda. God Bless him for putting his country first!!

If Williams had all the years he spent in the military back, it is hard to imagine what records he wouldn't have owned. There may never be a better pure hitter. (Career OPS+ 190!!)

Well, the Babe spent the first 5 years of his career as a pitcher (120 hits short) and Gehrig's illness forced him to retire at age 35 or 36 (275 hits short). Williams also lost significant time in the Korean war, as did Willie Mays. So I guess it just comes down to appreciating those that were able to stay in the game and put up the numbers they did (or are).

I am not sure if they were "throwing dirt on the guy" as much as they were pointing out that he was playing awful - which he was. If he was anybody else - even another seasoned veteran - would any team have had the patience to stick with him, his fielding, and his stats? I am glad he is doing well, but history does not predict that a middle infielder will go through a two year slump and then revert back to All-Star level play. Neither does it show him sustaining his current level of play...

Great achievement for Jeter to progress up the 3000 hit mark. Passing greats like Waner, Brett, and Ripken Jr., help to provide perspective on the long term excellence of Jeter. Oddly, Jeter was the first Yankee to reach 3000 hits as a Yankee who spent most of his career in New York. Dave Winfield collected his 3000th as a Twin, although he spent slightly more time as a Yankee than a Padre. Paul Waner collected his 3000th as a Yankee, although the vast majority of his career was as a Pirate.

Strange to see neither Babe Ruth, nor Lou Gehrig were able to reach 3000 hits, despite their many accomplishments. Other greats like Ted Williams, lost out on joining this exclusive club because of WW2.

I did note that he is the only one in the top 20 who did it in under 20 years of play. Very impressive. It's dangerous to predict much for the future, but his HOF case is already made.

Very satisfying as a Yankee fan to see Jeter prove the skeptics and analysts wrong. They all tried to throw dirt on the guy and bury his career over the past 2 or 3 seasons. Like a Phoenix the guy just keeps rising. Remarkable. My crystal ball see's him ending up in the top five or six all time in hits.
