As a Red Sox fan, the way things play out with Youkilis and Middlebrooks will provide a clear sign of how the team views their playoff chances. Right now and for the future, Middlebrooks is the better player. If making the playoffs is the only goal, Middlebrooks should keep playing after Youk gets back. If they play Youk over Middlebrooks, it tells me they're trying to build up his trade value, and that the playoffs aren't the top goal. I'm fine with that, as I don't see them going all the way with this group. In fact, I would love to see them be smart about it, drive up his value, and then deal him at the deadline for some young pitching. The Sox have some terrific positional prospects coming up, but need more pitching. For those of you speculating on the Sox dumping Youk's salary for some crappy AAAA pitcher, dream on. He's not that expensive, and these are the Red Sox, not the Pirates.

I think Youk will come off the DL and Middlebrooks will get sent down. Not that Middlebrooks deserves it, but I can at least understand that you don't put a kid without any OF experience intp a MLB lineup. as an OF. He has no OF experience at all. Not in the minors, school, little league etc.

So with Youk, AGonZ, and Ortiz needing to be in the lineup, down he goes. But under the Rules he can be called back at any time - if there's an injury. Once he's back in Boston, you can expect to see Youk and Ortiz getting days off. If Middlebrooks can get some EXP in the minors all the better.

PS I have Middlebrooks on my fantasy team - so I won't be thrilled to lose his bat. But honestly - do you think Bobby V is going to tolerate some crummy production form Youk? I think not.

There'll be a salary dump trade. Especially of the Sawx don't turn it around.
